Detailed description is Der Europakanal in Regensburg ist seiner Funktion nach der Schleusenkanal Regensburg mit der Schleuse Regensburg der hier staugeregelten Bundeswasserstraße Donau.Lage und technische DatenDie Schleusenkammer hat eine Länge von 190 Metern bei einer Breite von 12 Metern. Sie liegt an Stromkilometer 2379,7. Die Fallhöhe der Schleuse beträgt 5,20 m. Diese nördliche Umgehung des Donau-Hauptstromes wurde 1972–1978 gebaut mit Rücksicht auf die seit 1146 bestehende steinerne Bogenbrücke. Als Teilstück der europäischen Schifffahrtsstraße von der Nordsee bis in das Schwarze Meer erhielt dieser Kanal die örtliche Bezeichnung Europakanal. Er zweigt im Westen des Stadtteils Stadtamhof bei km 2381,22 vom Hauptstrom der Donau ab und vereint sich im Osten bei km 2379,24 mit dem Regen, 420 m oberhalb dessen Mündung in den Nordarm der Donau. Die Umgehungsstrecke der Donau im Stadtgebiet von Regensburg hat also eine Länge von rund zwei Kilometern.Stadtamhof ist seit dem Bau des Kanals vom nördlich angrenzenden Stadtteil Steinweg getrennt. Aus diesem Grund wird Stadtamhof seitdem von einigen Quellen als Insel bezeichnet.BrückenÜber den Kanal führen zwei Straßenbrücken und eine Fußgängerbrücke. Am östlichen Kanalende direkt unterhalb der Schleuse liegt die Protzenweiherbrücke, die zeitgleich mit dem Kanalbau errichtet wurde. Die Oberpfalzbrücke verbindet den Stadtteil Steinweg mit Stadtamhof weiter westlich und in der Nähe des Kraftwerks Regensburg, am Anfang des Europakanals im Westen, wurde eine Fußgängerbrücke errichtet.
