La primera fase (1919-1923) fue idealista y romántica, la segunda (1923-1925) mucho más racionalista y en la tercera (1925-1929) alcanzó su mayor reconocimiento, coincidiendo con su traslado de Weimar a Dessau.
En 1930, bajo la dirección de Mies van der Rohe, se trasladó a Berlín donde cambió por completo la orientación de su programa de enseñanza.
