Detailed description is Elmira is the largest community within the Township of Woolwich originally in Waterloo County, Ontario but now in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

In 1798, William Wallace was one of the first settlers after he was deeded 86078acre of land on the Grand River for a cost of $16,364.
