In the lead-up to the Battle of the Little Bighorn, on June 7, 1876, during one of the largest battles of the Indian Wars, 1500 Lakota, Northern and Southern Cheyenne, Nakota and Dakota of the Sioux Nation, and many other regional tribes, forced the withdrawal of 1000 troops under the command of Brigadier General Crook.
Eight days later, with General Crook’s troops withdrawn for supplies, General George Armstrong Custer and his troops were defeated at the Little Bighorn.
General Custer’s utter defeat shocked the nation and galvanized support for the eventual overpowering of the great Indian tribes of America.

When Elmer “Slim” Kobold homesteaded his ranch in 1911, after much time and dedicated research, he discovered that he owned the site – or a substantial portion – of this historic battle.
Realizing the importance of this history, Kobold worked most of his life to ensure that that legacy would not be lost, and that the site would be preserved for future generations to observe and reflect on its significance.
Since large deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas are present throughout the land, it became Slim’s life’s ambition that this land remain undisturbed in its natural state, thereby preserving its historical battlefield and Indian artifacts.
So in 1978, after intense negotiations and urgings by Kobold, and all the allies he could rally to his cause, Rosebud Battlefield was designated in the National Register of Historic Places.
Within a few years, that determined tough old cowboy, Slim Kobold, was able to convince the Montana Legislature to preserve the land and purchase the site, establishing the Rosebud Battlefield State Park & National Monument..
