“El Chato” is a 1958 GMC PD4104, specially made by order from Greyhound lines, for their extensive fleet renovation initiatives to include buses with air ride suspension.
“El Chato” was assigned to the station in La Salle, Il, where he served thousands of travelers, offering a new level of comfort and security without precedents.
Its estimated that “El Chato” served as a greyhound bus for little over 10 years, at this time, early 70’s, there was a boom or trend to have converted buses as Rv’s.
A family from Peru, Il bought “El Chato” at a Greyhound auction, and carefully work on its conversion, at that point a Bedroom, restroom, kitchen, living room and bulk beds were tastefully incorporated in his interior.
The Family enjoy the kind service of “El Chato” in countless vacations across the US and Canada, but time pass by, the kids grow up and sadly “El Chato” was abandoned for years, before making his way to Victoria Texas where he was going to be updated and recovered as an RV, but the project never get done and “El Chato” was placed for sale.
In an early June morning of 2012, he was found by his current owners, they fall in love immediately with his charm, and drove him that very same morning to Austin, where he got pampered with full service and a conversion to his new status, THE FIRST BUSTAURANT OF ASUTIN! Now “El Chato” with great food and awesome atmosphere, can still do what he was made for, serve people!.
