Se trata de un monolito granítico que es uno de los desafíos favoritos de los escaladores del mundo.La formación recibió el nombre de "El Capitán" por el Batallón Mariposa cuando exploraron el valle en el año 1851.
El Capitán fue considerada una traducción al español aproximada del nombre local de los nativos americanos para el acantilado, trascrito de diversas formas como "To-to-kon oo-lah" o "To-tock-ah-noo-lah".
