In winter 2011, Earth to Sky Calculus was just a name, a simple idea.
Today, Earth to Sky has meaning, history, perhaps even a touch of fame.
Really though, it’s just a group of geeky high school kids along with their crazy teacher reaching for the stars, or the edge of the stratosphere rather.

It all started in May of 2011 with The One that Got Away.

It was our very first launch, we had successfully filled up our balloon with helium without it detonating in the face of some poor unsuspecting teenager, and we were so proud of achievement, we decided it would be a fantastic idea to let the helium out and fill it up again.
(Perhaps watching the oversized globe flinging itself about also overfilled our self-esteem.) .

However, in our calculations we seemed to forget that helium is, in fact, less dense than oxygen… hence the floating phenomenon.
In our eagerness to prove to that balloon that we were its supreme masters, we promptly gathered in the courtyard to liberate the balloon.
Well, the balloon did indeed go flying off, but rather than deflating as we had imagined, it just made its jolly way… up.
So, as our balloon slowly shrunk into the vast blue above us, our egos also decreased substantially in size.

Of course, that first balloon did not reach the stratosphere; in fact, it never left our range of vision, and it did indeed deplete gradually.
Our balloon landed softly somewhere in the Tungsten Hills, not far really, but far enough to remind us of how much work we still had to do.
The One that Got Away was by no means our only failed flight, but since then, in little less than a year, we have traveled to the edge of space on several occasions.
Through our cameras, we have seen the tips of the Sierras from 125,000 feet in the air.

So why did we decide to do this? How did a Calculus class started in our middle school years turn into a journey to the stratosphere? Well, at some point in 2010, Dr.
Phillips, our faithful teacher proposed the possibility of launching a satellite that would orbit the Earth for three to four months, conducting some sort of experiment.

Earth to Sky aspires to launch a satellite into orbit, whose purpose will be to photograph the inside of the Northern Lights.
Our weather balloons are ideal for conducting preliminary satellite launch tests, as the conditions the balloon experiences are similar to those the satellite will be experience as it orbits Earth.
We also continue experimentation with the effect of solar flares on radiation and ozone in the atmosphere, and the rate of mutation in haloarchaea sent to the space-like environment of the upper atmosphere.

Though started with the long-term goal of launching a satellite, Earth to Sky Calculus has since morphed.
We fell in love with our weather balloons; there is nothing so beautiful as the pictures the cameras come back with, and to us, there are no experiences more valuable than the ones we have shared launching the balloons.
