clan Kanyakubja Dakshin Rarhi Kāẏāstha 'Dutta Chaudhury' lineage of a heritage town- Andul in Howrah dist.
of West Bengal, IN.
Maharshi Bharadwaja clan Kannaujiya kayastha 'zamindar' DUTTA CHAUDHURI family of Andul, is originally the 'Duttas', descendant of Purushottam Dutta, who being one among the 5 Kayasthas, sent to Bengal in 10th century CE., with 5 Brahmins in response of the invitation from King Hemanta Sen of Bengal, by then King Adisur of Kannauj (UP) to re-establish Vedic control in Bengal.
Purushottam Dutta settled down at a village called Bali on the west bank of the Dwarkeswar river, in the Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly District, Bengal.
Since then, his descendants earned the name- 'Duttas of Bali'..
.
In 11th century CE., Purushottam’s grandson, Kanak moved to a village known as Kadam Dandi of West Midnapore.
The 11th man from Purushottam was Ganapati Dutta, who moved to a place Halisahar, in North 24 Pargana district of West Bengal(WB), India..
.
Ganapati’s brother, Tekari Dutta moved from Bali to Andul [in Howrah district, WB] and established his residence in the 14th century.
Tekari Dutta had inherited enough capital from his father Murari, to be able to acquire the extensive property Muzzaffarpur Pargana to become established as the first zamindar of Andul.
His residence was said to have been built on 252 bighas of land.
He was later awarded the title of “ChaudhurI", which is a hereditary title of honor and surname, by the contemporary Nawab of Bengal, Ghiasuddin Azam Shah.
Zamindar Tekari Dutta's lineage began to known as the 'DUTTA CHAUDHURIes' of Andul.
During the Mughal Empire, this family belonged to the nobility and formed the ruling class..
.
The Zamindars of Bengal were influential in the development of Bengal.
They played pivotal part during the Indian Rebellion of 1857..
.
With the Mughal conquest of Bengal, "zamindar" became a generic title embracing people. All categories of zamindars under the Mughals were required to perform certain police, judicial and military duties.
Zamindars under the Mughals were, in fact, more the public functionaries than revenue collecting agents.
Zamindars held considerable powers in their territories: magisterial, army recruitment (as lathials), revenue collection and taxation, among others.
Zamindars built lavish palaces, lush gardens, schools, temples and other venues of philanthropy.
The 'Chaudhuri' in most cases, had authority to deal with the complaints of debts, thefts and petty quarrels and to impose paltry fines..
.
The territorial zamindars had judicial powers.
Naturally, judge-magistracy, as an element of state authority conferred status with attendant power, which really made them the lords of their domains.
They held regular courts, called zamindari adalat.
The courts gave them not only power and status but some income as well by way of fines, presents and perquisites..
.
Zamindar Krishnananda Dutta later given all the property to his younger son- Kandarpa Ram Dutta Chaudhuri and he himself left for Puri (in Orissa), by caring the ancestral deity Sri Sri Radha Madhava with him..

.
Kandarpa Ram had three sons – Ram Sharan, Gobinda Sharan and Hari Sharan.
Ram Sharan and Gobinda Sharan were constantly at loggerheads with each other regarding the distribution of ancestral property.
In 1580 CE Gobinda Sharan Dutta Chaudhuri severed ties with Andul, and went over to a place called “Badar Rasa”, which eventually expanded to become “Gobindapur”, named after him.
Hari Sharan Dutta Chaudhury got a government job and moved to a place called "Barada" in Muragachha Pargana"of Diamond Harbour.
.
.
Due to the apparent atrocities committed on his property and belongings by his younger brother Gobinda Sharan, Ram Sharan suffered considerable loss in self-esteem.
He could not recover from the shock, and passed away.
His 4th son, Kashiswar was 17 years old, when he met with the Mughal Prince Shah Jahan and appealed for help, describing his ancestral background, mentioning how his family was in dire straits because of the evil deeds perpetuated by his uncle Gobinda Sharan.
Shah Jahan accepted his appeal, and was so moved that he immediately ordered the lost estates to be returned back to Kashiswar‟s family.
Kashiswar was able to get back his ancestral properties.
Later, Kashiswar constructed the family's 'Durga dalan' and re-started Durga Puja in the year of 1609 CE.
in accordance with the traditional requirements of the Brihannandikeshwara Purana.

The Durga Puja of the zamindar Dutta Chaudhuri family is considered as one among the oldest in Bengal.
The Durga dalan build by Kashiswar unfortunately collapsed around the year 1929 CE., but his descendants took no time in getting a new one constructed and functioning within a year.
.
.
Kashiwar had 5 sons, out of which was Harish Chandra Dutta Chaudhury.
Harish Chandra had two sons- Ramprasad and Srimanta.
In the late 17th century, Srimanta Dutta Chaudhury became the first zamindar of Dinajpur, of which Raja Ganesha was the real founder of this estate..

Gobinda Sharan after moving to Gobindapur, had discarded the tittle 'Chaudhuri'.
His grand son, Ramchandra Dutta was persuaded by British East India Company to give up his place at Gobindapur in exchange of some land at Hathkhola, located in North of Calcutta.
This was done in order to allow the construction of Fort William at Gobindapur.
In 1698 CE Ramchandra came and settled at '2, Dutta para lane' of Hathkhola.
Later his descendants became well known as the 'DUTTAs OF HATHKHOLA'.
He initiated family's Durga and Kali puja in Hathkhola.
The house of Ramchandra Dutta is today known as 'The house of Madan Mohan Dutta'..
.
In 1794 CE, Madan Mohan's cousin brother- Jagat Ram Dutta moved from his ancestral house and settled in Nimtala Ghat Street (of Hathkhola).
His house is known as 'Hathkhola Dutta Bari'.
He also initiated family's Durga and Kali puja there.
.
.
In 1882 CE Shymol Dhon Dutta, solicitor at Calcutta High Court and a Dutta of Hathkhola moved from his Nimtala Ghat residence and bought a ready made house at 159, Balaram De Street.
He also initiated Durga and Kali puja there from the year he moved in.
