Silifke’de en yüksek dereceli okul olan ortaokulu bitirdikten sonra subay olan ağabeylerimin yanında Ankara ve Kırklareli’nde okudum ve Kırklareli Lisesi’nden mezun oldum. Kırklareli lisesinde ilk aşk şiirimi yazdım. Ankara Atatürk Lisesi’nde edebiyat ve kompozisyon öğretmenim olan Cahit Okurer bir gün ne olmak istediğim sordu; mühendis olmak istediğimi söyledim. Bilim adamı olmak istemez misin, dedi. Onun etkisi altında İstanbul Üniversitesi Psikoloji Bölümü’ne yazıldım ve oradan mezun olduktan sonra ABD’de Illinois Üniversitesi’nde doktoramı yaptım. Uzmanlık alanım iletişim psikolojisidir. Amerika’da doktora öğrencisiyken, benim gibi doktora öğrencisi olan Kaliforniya’da doğmuş büyümüş Emily ile tanıştım ve evlendim. On bir yıl süren evliliğimizde üç çocuğumuz oldu: Ayşen, Elif ve Timur. Evlendiğimde ne kendimi tanıyormuşum, ne de evliliğin ne olduğunu. Silifke’de büyürken çevremde gördüğüm evlilik, koca, baba modelleriyle Kaliforniya’da büyümüş feminist bir Amerikalı kıza kocalık yapmaya çalıştım. Sonuç: hem ben çok ıstırap çektim hem de Emily’e acı çektirdim. Benim şimdi yüreğimi en çok yakan çocuklarıma verdiğim acılar. Onlardan dört yıl ayrı yaşadım. Yaşadığım acılar her şeyi bilmediğimi, öğrenmem gereken çok şey olduğunu gösterdi ve yalnız bilgi yönünden değil, insan olarak gelişmem gerektiğine ikna oldum.
