La demeure de la romancière George Sand (1804-1876), est la propriété de l'État depuis le 6 octobre 1952, à la suite de la donation du domaine par Aurore Lauth-Sand, petite-fille de l'écrivain.Le château et l'ensemble du domaine avec son jardin, son cimetière, ses dépendances et les deux prés, dénommés Pré Pile et Pré des Clous, sont classés au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté en date du.
Le parc de six hectares est classé par le ministère de la Culture au titre de jardin remarquable et le château transformé en musée, est labellisé Maisons des Illustres.
