Disability Partnerships provides community-based services in coordination with other partners.
We carefully select and develop relationships with key partners who are working to achieve goals for the physically disabled.

DPP is unique in that that we provide mutually beneficial and innovative solutions that help persons with physical disabilities improve their quality of life.

As a newly launched 501c3 organization, we are starting with three small but significant programs that will lay the foundation to achieve our long term goals..

Wheels of Defense.
Disability Partnerships Project will provide customized classes on the basics of personal safety, boundary setting, and physical skills for women who use wheelchairs.
Initially, the program will launch in the Washington, DC, metro area with hopes to expand across the country.

As a result of their physical vulnerabilities, research shows women with disabilities often have much higher rates of abuse and sexual assault than able-bodied women, and are often subject to unwanted touching and verbal harassment.

“Wheels of Defense” is an innovative program idea designed to strengthen the safety of women who are wheelchair bound.
Taught by a certified self defense instructor with experience personalizing classes for people of all abilities, “Wheels of Defense” is a critical activity that highlights communities in the metro Washington, DC, area working together to increase the safety of its most vulnerable citizens.

This unique, inspiring and challenging opportunity will:.
• Increase the confidence of women with disabilities;.
• Equip women with disabilities with tools and strategies to deal with intrusions from harassment to attack,; and .
• Strengthen the commitment of women with disabilities to reintegrate with their community.

Disability Partnerships is a member of the Spinal Cord Consortium of Greater Washington Metro area (SCI).
SCI is a partnership with the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, Adventist Healthcare Physical Health and Rehabilitation of Rockville, Maryland, Innova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, United Spinal Association in Washington, DC, and Independence Now in Silver Spring, Maryland.
This particular program activity will be done in coordination with other organizations within the Consortium.

Since the goal of most rehabilitation hospitalization efforts is to safely and successfully reintegrate patients to the local community, this partnership activity will help increase confidence while enabling them to adjust to life beyond a hospital setting and develop independence.
A robust evidence base supports the efficacy of such training, including increased confidence and reduced anxiety, and a reduced number of attacks .

The courses will be free of charge for the attendees and DPP will provide a small stipend to the attendees for transportation.
Disability Partnerships would like to kick off the “Wheels of Defense” in Summer 2016.

Gym Partnership Scholarship Program.

With your assistance, Disability Partnerships will collaborate directly with national and local gyms to provide funds for persons with physical disabilities who want to join a gym but do not have the funds to offset the cost of a gym membership.
For its inaugural year, DPP is hoping to collaborate with a minimum 4 national gyms and provide funding and support for a gym membership to no less than 50 people with a physical disability nationwide.
