Detailed description is We are a large department, with many oportunities, and we welcome you! The Department of Biological Sciences was formed in 1983 as a merger of the former Departments of Botany, Zoology and Biochemistry in what was then the College of Sciences. In 1995 Microbiology was added and in 2003 several faculty from the former Departments of Environmental Toxicology and Aquaculture, Fisheries & Wildlife joined our group. In 2005, the Biology Instruction Group was added to make the Department of Biological Sciences one of the largest departments on campus.. . We boast one of the largest enrollments of undergraduate majors of any department on campus. We offer BS degrees in Microbiology and Biological Sciences and a BA in Biological Sciences for those who seek a broader liberal arts experience. There are options under each, including special degree programs for those who wish to enter the rehabilitation sciences or pharmacy. In addition we are developing 5-year programs in which a student will receive both a BS and an MS. For example a combined BS in Biological Sciences and MS in Bioengineering is currently available.. . In addition to our majors we advise students in pre-professional health, pre-rehabilitation sciences, pre-pharmacy and pre-physician assistant curricula. Overall we advise over 1000 students and teach over 3000 in our major and service classes each semester.. . The department also has one of the largest graduate programs in the college, with students in our MS and PhD programs in Biological Sciences and Microbiology and other students in the MS and PhD interdepartmental programs of Plant and Environmental Science and Environmental Toxicology. There is ample opportunity for financial support for our students, either as a research assistant or as one of our approximately 65 teaching assistants.. . We provide significant services for several facilities, institutes, centers and programs, many of which have College or University-wide participation. These include the DNA Learning Center, SC LIFE, the First Program, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Clemson University Biomedical Institute, the Institute for Applied Ecology, the Institute for Environmental Toxicology, the Jordan Hall Imaging Facility, the P & A and Cherry Farm Aquatic Research Facility, "Expeditions with Patrick McMillan" and the pre-professional health advising center. Our involvement with these programs ranges from full administrative (and staff), infrastructural and financial responsibility to partial responsibility. The directors of all of these facilities (except the First Program) are faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences. We also run the Biology Merit Exam, which recognizes and promotes outstanding achievement in biological sciences amongst middle and high school students in South Carolina.. . Also hosted through the department are a number of clubs and organizations, including Roots & Shoots, Tigers for Tigers, The Microbiology Society, The BioSci Club, Beta Beta Beta, Clemson Univ. Subunit of the American Fisheries Society, and the Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association.
