Why Hikmah?.

There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom.
It is not enough for a Muslim to be knowledgeable of his faith without striving to attain the wisdom it requires to be fruitful.
In other words, it is not enough to simply know.
One needs to know what to do with what they know.
That is hikmah..

When we set out to decide a name for the organization in 2006, one theme that remained central to all discussions was the idea that Muslim scholars have a responsibility to not only impart knowledge (‘ilm) but also to explain how to appropriately apply it to a person’s life .
This knowledge of how to use the ’ilm we gain in a manner pleasing to Allah is at the core of hikmah..

We at Darul Hikmah recognize that Muslims in the West live under circumstances very different from those they have faced in the past.
Today’s pluralistic, multi-cultural society boasts a magnitude the world has never yet witnessed.
In facing the unique challenges that such a society poses, we felt that the best symbol to represent our emphasis on praxis in Islamic learning was “Darul Hikmah”, or “The House of Wisdom”..
The Messenger of Allah (upon him blessings and peace) said, "I am Darul Hikmah (the house of wisdom) and ‘Ali is its door." (Graded hasan by Hafiz Ibn Hajar).

What is Hikmah?.

The Arabic word hikmah is a hard one to translate, its implications being so multi-dimensional and its meanings so deep.
Imam Raghib al-Asfahani defined it as “the realization of truth through knowledge and intellect”.
He later adds, “In respect to humans, hikmah refers to knowledge of existent things and of good actions.
It is this meaning that is inferred when describing Luqman (may Allah send him peace) in the Qur’an: “And certainly We bestowed hikmah upon Luqman”..

Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali, however, notes,.

“Hikmah is knowledge of the most excellent of things through the most excellent Knowledge.
Allah is therefore the true possessor of hikmah (Hakim), since He knows the most excellent things through the most excellent knowledge…”.

Perhaps the masters of exegesis summarized hikmah best when they defined it as “the knowledge of Truth as it relates to one’s self and of good for the purpose of practicing upon it”.
