Detailed description is Daisy Mae's Cookies and Bakery is named after my best friend. My dog Daisy Mae. I never thought I'd be inspired by an animal or fall in love with one. But then again Daisy wasn't your ordinary pet. She was my friend, protector, and neighborhood spokes-dog Can money buy happiness? Some say yes, but the overwhelming majorities claim it’s not possible. Can money buy you things to make you happy? Again, opinions differ, but Rita Takes, co-proprietor of Daisy Mae’s Cookies & Bakery, hopes to give you a little bit of happiness with each bite of her delightfully sinful confections.. A part-time pharmacy assistant, Rita has been baking as long as she can remember. Using time-honored recipes, and traditions and tools passed down through her family, she tries to place the love she feels into the creations that come out of her oven. “Everything that comes from my kitchen is homemade. These recipes are handed down from generation to generation, and we really try to only involve family in the entire operation,” states Rita. She still uses her grandmother’s original rolling pin and cookie cutters, and has rarely ever tinkered with a recipe. . With the recent trending in weddings and specialty shops, Rita, and her co-proprietor and daughter Beth may have hit the market with impeccable timing. Many brides, eager to save money and offer more ranging choices to the standard sheet cake, are now choosing to pursue the option of cake drops, cupcakes, candies, pies, cookies and any number of assorted goodies and treats. Coupled with the fact that specialized bakeries seem to be coming back en vogue, their one-of-a-kind creations offer many different groups of people a sizeable menu to choose from. . “My favorite part of the entire process is watching the smiles that spread across a person’s face after they eat one of my creations. I try and remain true to the traditions, and follow in my grandmother’s footsteps. We try to use strictly family members for everything from helping bake, packaging, and cleaning up, so that it’s all consistent.” Rita says with a smile. She has yet to find a successor willing to step in and take over the actual baking of the business. Beth says, “I am not really a baker. I am good at doing the public relations aspect of the business, doing the networking, and computer aspects of it, but I am just not really a baker”. . The two have flirted with the idea of going more mainstream and finding a shop to open and offer on-demand purchases, as well as personalized orders, but are still getting a good amount of orders and clients from running the business through Rita’s kitchen. Shipping as far away as Iraq, and many places in the continental U.S., the creations are becoming more popular and creating a large following. “We recently came in contact with the Dubuque Museum and were given the opportunity to provide cookies for events. Through that, we were offered a vendor booth near the river on Saturdays to sell our confections. We jumped at the chance, and are one of the only food vendors for the events held on Saturdays,” Rita states. “We have a lot of different options that people are looking for in a dessert option. We have many different cookie cutters, and have even created individualized edibles to use as place cards at weddings. We try and keep things as unique as possible to keep our customers coming back again and again”.. Rita often takes her creations in to work, and sells them to use the sales money to raise money for different organizations, her favorite being Children’s Miracle Network. “I have taken plates of cookies to work, and as I walk in the door, people are already asking for cookies. They never last long. I was selling them for .50 cents apiece, and as I realized that I was able to sell them consistently, it occurred to me that maybe I should be doing this as a business. It’s a lot of work, and with working an outside job as well as the long hours it takes to create the orders, I am exhausted at the end of the day. But I love it, and I love making people happy. If I can do it with a cookie, a cupcake, or something else that I made? I figure that I can make this a business that is a career, not a job.”. Beth sacrifices of herself to be an official taste-tester and works many hours to make sure the business is as technologically savvy as possible. Along with also having a ‘regular’ position, both mother and daughter give of their time so that they can seize the opportunity that lies before them. Naming the business after a beloved pet that was brought in to the home by Beth; a Rottweiler named Daisy Mae, the dog remained with Rita after Beth’s inevitable flight from the nest. A constant companion, who still brings tears to the eyes of both Rita and Beth at the mere mention of her name, it is a theme throughout every facet of the business that is intertwined with love from start to finish. .
