Detailed description is D.A. Dance Academy is unlike any other dance school in the area. The focus is on creating dance artists who have a solid technical foundation. A dance artist is someone who has a PASSION for their craft, who has a KNOWLEDGE of historical and current works that influenced or changed the course of dance and who is striving to improve their own TECHNIQUE. . . Ballet students learn a Balanchine influenced classical ballet technique. Emphasis is on HOW the students are moving. Discussions include: which muscles we should be using and how to activate them and what we should be thinking about as we dance each exercise. Following each exercise, students are given corrections to apply. Often, students are asked to self-evaluate or work to find corrections for a partner. Class is given using correct French and anatomical terminology. Students set goals twice a year and class is designed to help students reach those goals which keeps them motivated. Ballet students also learn Ballet history and watch a full length ballet during the year. Pointe is introduced to those who are ready (but not all students) in level 2.. . Modern dance students begin with Bartenieff Fundamentals and Transition into Limon Technique. Emphasis is on HOW the students are performing the movement and transcending mimicry. Following our exercises students are given corrections to apply or and are often asked to self-evaluate. Students of modern dance also set goals twice a year, around which class is designed. Modern dance students learn body-mind centering and explore improvisation in an effort to learn about their instrument: the human body. Students learn the history of modern dance as well as watch videos of current works. Students are encouraged to discover and share their favorite choreographer with the class. . . In addition to ballet and modern dance, we have many student choreographers. Those students can choose to create a piece to be considered in our end of year production. Classes on choreography or other topics may pop up throughout the year if enough students show interest. . . Gymnastics has been added to our school of ballet and modern dance, as dancers today must be able to "do it all". Emphasis is again placed on HOW students are performing each skill. Students receive excellent conditioning for strength and flexibility while gaining skills that are also useful in dance choreography.. . Entrance is by audition only. Students must be 8 years old to audition. An audition ensures that a student is placed at the appropriate level to challenge, but not overwhelm. . . Students are moved up to the next level as their ability improves. This means that students may be in the same level for more than one, or many years depending upon their progress. . . We present an end of year production each year, but the emphasis is not on that production until January or February. All students are not in the production.
