De acuerdo con el censo de 2000 tiene una población de 5,932 habitantes, que ha bajado desde su pico máximo alcanzado en 1980 con 6,049 habitantes, más de la mitad de la población vive en la ciudad de Lordsburg, que es la sede del condado.El condado de Hidalgo fue creado el 25 de febrero de 1919 con el extremo sur del condado de Grant.
De acuerdo con el Libro Azul 2001/2 de Nuevo México, el nombre del condado se tomó por la población mexicana de Guadalupe Hidalgo, actualmente Gustavo A.
Madero, Distrito Federal, (donde se encuentra la Basílica de Guadalupe) y donde fue firmado el Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo, que terminó con la Intervención estadounidense en México y por el cual el territorio que es el estado de Nuevo México se anexionó a los Estados Unidos; sin embargo, otras fuentes señalan que el nombre es en honor de Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Padre de la Independencia de México.Límites Al norte con el condado de Grant.
