Detailed description is Sede Palazzo Comunale in Piazza Gramsci, 1 - Aulla Aulla risale al IX secolo e divenne presto un punto d’incrocio importante per tutta la vallata lungo la Via Francigena.
Nell’884, anno di fondazione della città , il Conte Marchese Adalberto di Toscana costruì L’abbazia di San Caprasio alla confluenza tra il torrente Aulella e il Magra.
Nell’annosa lotta per il dominio della Lunigiana tra i Malaspina e i Vescovi di Luni, Aulla parteggiò per i primi, in merito del suo fondatore.
Con l’intervento del Papa Onofrio III nel 1217, l’abbazia di Aulla venne sottomessa ai Vescovi.
La seconda metà del trecento e gran parte del secolo successivo furono caratterizzati da una grande instabilità politica.
I marchesi Malaspina ed il vescovo di Luni perdettero potere e Aulla fu disputata tra Firenze, Genova e Milano.
Nel XV secolo, Aulla conobbe il dominio della famiglia genovese dei Campofregoso, mentre Albiano e Caprigliola nel 1404 passarono sotto la Repubblica di Firenze.
Il feudo di Olivola si alleò invece con i Visconti di Milano, vicari dell’imperatore in Italia.
Nel XVI secolo, Aulla fu acquistata dalla nobile famiglia genovese dei Centurione ai Malaspina, ma presto ritornò nelle mani dei Marchesi.
Tra il 1522 e il 1525, Giovanni dalle Bande Nere de' Medici tentò di imporre il suo dominio in Lunigiana, obbligando i Malaspina a cedergli il feudo di Aulla, ma questa vendita non fu ratificata dall’imperatore e risultò nulla.
In questo periodo fu edificata la fortezza della Brunella.

Oggi il comune è il risultato dell’unificazione, avvenuta il secolo scorso, di Aulla con la sua abbazia, Olivola e Pallerone feudo dei Malaspina, Albiano e Caprigliola.
Parzialmente rovinato dal terremoto del 1920, l’antico borgo di Aulla fu completamente distrutto dai bombardamenti durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
Rimane oggi solo una parte dell’antica Abbazia di San Caprasio, l’abside, e il palazzo del Centurione.
