It all started with a cooking segment on a local Northern Kentucky cable show.
De Stewart, known as “the Businessman Chef” wanted to show how spices and herbs can change the flavor of common foods.
When people began asking where the spices could be purchased, an idea was born.
Initially, De and Susan Stewart, with 2 card tables and 15 products, began selling custom blends at local farmers’ markets.
It was at one of those markets that Findlay Market asked if they would be interested in a small space in the new renovated Market House.
In a space of less than 500 sq.
ft.
and with about 75 items, in February of 2006, Colonel De opened.
In less than 6 months, the store was bursting at the seams.

Colonel De Gourmet Herbs & Spices now has stores in Historic Findlay Market, Jungle Jim's at Eastgate, and now their World Headquarters located in Ft.
Thomas, KY.
With over 500 spices, herbs, and blends, the business has gone international and provides custom blends to chefs and restaurants in the US, Canada, and beyond.

Colonel De Gourmet Herbs & Spices is the dream of De Stewart, whose interest in cooking began at a very early age.
De learned at his mother’s apron strings.
During the ‘50s and ‘60s their house seemed to be one of the hubs for the Hillbilly Diaspora that was taking place.
Relatives, friends, and friends of friends would show up at the house, everybody would hug, and then the women would attack the kitchen where wondrous and magical things were prepared.
De learned a lot by observing but had the feeling there could be more to it than just salt, pepper, and lard..

De continued to learn all he could about herbs and spices, even as he pursued other careers.
De was a founder of the Madison E-Zone (a technology incubator); served on the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for several years; served on the board and was Chair for two years on the Workforce Investment Board (covering an eight county region)..
