Detailed description is College Bound is a school/university academic enrichment and support program that benefits urban high school students from primarily three Boston Public High schools--West Roxbury Academy, Brighton High, and Urban Science Academy. College Bound began in 1989 under the direction and visionary leadership of Prof. George Ladd. In the mid-70's, University President J. Donald Monan, and the Dean of the Lynch School, Lester Przewlocki asked Prof. Ladd to serve as Boston College's liaison to Boston Public Schools during the city's busing turmoil. Father Monan then suggested establishing a more formal connection with particular schools, and College Bound was born. . . College Bound began and continues to be a university-school partnership between local Boston public high schools and Boston College. College Bound was an intensive program that provided academic enrichment, social enhancement, and guidance support from a team of volunteer tutors, mentors, advisors and staff from the Boston College community. In the first fourteen years, they graduated 142 high school seniors who were all accepted into college. The College Bound Alumni have collectively received nearly $16 million in grants and aid! . . After the direction of George Ladd, John Cawthorne--Associate Dean for Students and Outreach served as the interim director from 2003 to 2004 followed by Michele Montavon. Catherine Wong became the director in 2007 when the program was transformed to a participatory change action model that is student focused & situated in their neighborhoods.. . In 2008 College Bound partnered with ITEST, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation to provide S.T.E.M. classes to College Bound students. . . Currently, the College Bound program continues its tradition of excellence with students from Brighton High, West Roxbury Academy, and Urban Science Academy.
