Detailed description is United States Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor On May 4th, 1882 Congress authorized that a Life Saving Station be built at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Jerry’s Point Station was completed and placed into service in 1888 with Silas H. Harding as keeper. On November 26th 1888 the Schooner Oliver Dyer with 5 men on board broke free during a gale and grounded on the rocks near the Station. Keeper Harding and the Crew of Jerry’s Point Station were awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for their actions, which resulted in the saving of 4 lives. In 1908 a new station was built on Wood Island in the Mouth of the Piscataqua River. The Jerry’s Point Station was turned over to the War Department and Fort Stark was built on the location. Wood Island remained in service until 1942 when the Stationed moved to its current location New Castle, NH. The Current building was dedicated in Aug of 1967. In fall of 2000 the U. S. Coast Guard turned the cutter pier and other property over to the University of NH. The USCG Cutter Reliance, which had been using the pier, transferred to the Portsmouth Naval. Shipyard. The stations primary missions are search and rescue and homeland security.
