Detailed description is Classic Organic Farm began in 2007, in Southern California.
The Classic Organic Farmer and The Farmer's Wife are now farming in Hawai'i ! Classic Organic Farm is located on a lava flow that occurred more than a century ago.
Typically, the first plants to establish themselves on the lava are ferns.
Fern spores blow in from surrounding areas.
They send roots into the cracks in the jagged lava; they grow with the aid of more than one hundred inches of rain per year and the rich nutrients in the lava.
As the fern leaves drop and decompose, new soil is generated in the cracks.
Then other plants move in and the plant succession starts.
Now, sixty-foot Ohia trees and a dense understory of lush plants have grown on an inch or two of new soil.
The soil is covered with a few inches of decaying mulch.
We will copy what nature does; we will continue to create new soil while providing ourselves with food..
We use the native Hawai'ian Puna planting system, because it really is the best approach: Lava rocks or coconut husks are stacked to form a circular pu'u (raised bed).
An inch or two of finished compost, plus decaying mulch and cinder (ground-up lava) is added; the seeds or plants are planted in the pu'u and, as the plant grows, mulch is continually added.
