Detailed description is Worshiping God and sharing Christ's Aloha in Honoka'a, Hawaii A History of Honoka’a United Methodist Church.
.
After the European discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Captain Cook in 1778, the islands felt the effect of foreign influences.
Europeans began imposing their design on the people and the land of Hawaii.
Soon, missionaries followed.
Land ownership by grants from Hawaii royalty made large holdings possible.
Plantations commercialized the lucrative trade in sugar cane, pineapple, coffee and other crops.
Workers were brought in to plant, cultivate, and harvest these crops.
The laborers came from China, Japan, Portugal, Korea, the Philippines and a variety of other nations.
The workers and the missionaries who served them established communities of faith in the sugar plantation camps.
.
A Brief History of Honoka’a United Methodist Church.
.
The first sugar plantation on the Hamakua Coast opened in 1876.
In 1906, a wave of immigrant workers from the Philippines and Korea came to the Big Island of Hawaii and settled in and around Honoka’a.
It was through these two immigrant groups that the beginnings of the Honoka’a United Methodist Church of today started.
Many migrant workers had been recruited from Methodist congregations in Korea through the efforts of Dr.
Wan See Cho, a Methodist missionary.
In each Korean plantation camp, those already exposed to the Christian faith began to hold informal prayer meetings and hymn singing in a house provided by the Honoka’a Sugar Company, which was later called the Hamakua Sugar Company.
There were no ordained clergy, so local preachers provided the leadership for these early gatherings..
Rev.
Cenon Ramos received an appointment to the Big Island of Hawaii from the Philippines In 1910.
Through his efforts, the Filipino Methodist Church was constructed.
by the Hamakua Sugar Company built on land behind the present day Malama Market (formerly the T.
Kaneshiro Store) at a cost of less than $2,000.
The Rev.
S.G.
Afalla was appointed as pastor to the church in 1937.
The ministry of the church grew as he organized Sunday school programs and weekday education classes up and down the Hamakua Coast with gratifying results..
Two more streams of influence were to have their effects.
People from the mainland settled on the Big Island after WWI, WWII and the Korean War and found work in the Sugar industry.
As a result, in the early 1950’s that sugar plantation managers began to influence the life of the church.
By this time, Japanese Methodists were also becoming active in the church.
In 1950, the Hawaiian Mission of the Methodist Church acquired the present church property from the Hawaiian Board of the Congregational Church who had built the original structures in 1927.
The site on Mamane Street was centrally located in the town of Honokaa and near the local high school.
The grounds included a new parsonage and the church building provided a sanctuary for worship, a social hall, and a pastor’s study..
The first service in this new church was conducted by the Rev.
S.G.
Alfalla at a Watch Night Service held on December 31, 1950.
It was at this time the name of the church was changed from the Honoka’a Filipino Methodist Church to the Honoka’a Community Methodist Church.
Then, in 1956, an abandoned plantation building was acquired and placed in back of the social hall and was renovated for use as Sunday school classrooms..
The present name, Honoka’a United Methodist Church came about in 1968, when the Methodist Church joined with the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
The church’s membership and the congregation represented all the diverse ethnic groups of Hawaii.
In 2006, Honoka’a United Methodist Church celebrated its’ 100 year anniversary of serving the community.
