Detailed description is Chouteau Island is a extensive floodplain that gives visitors an opportunity to hike trails, view wildlife, fish, hunt, walk the historical bridge, & more. Chouteau Island is a extensive floodplain that gives visitors recreational opportunities to ride bicycles, hike trails, view wildlife, fish, hunt, visit the historical Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, & walk on the beach (when the river resides enough).. . Chouteau Island is actually a 5,500 acre three-island portion which includes Chouteau Island (3,200 acres), Mosenthein Island (1,000 acres), & Gabaret Island (1,300 acres). All combined go by the name Chouteau Island. The island is closed from dusk to dawn & the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge opens at 9am. . . Due to its location the island is great for American Bald Eagle spotting in certain times of the year. Some events are also hosted on the island but mainly on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. The island used to be inhabited by human life until "the great flood of '93" which flooded the island and the government bought it out. Now the island is under restoration that composes wetlands, hardwood forest, flood plains, & prairie habits. In late 2015 record flooding had the island shutdown for some time until the river receded. Even after the river receded all the low lying parts of the island held tremendous amounts of water making it inaccessible for months. The flood of '15 destroyed 2 levees. The destroyed levee locations are, 1 in the far southern parking lot off Roman Ln which was mainly used by hunters and the other off of Water Works Rd (facing west near the farm fields). Both locations have been blocked & or is private property. The flood also destroyed a good part of Roman Ln which is currently closed due to that issue. W. Chain of Rocks Rd & Water Works Rd was partially effected but is still accessible.. .
