In 2010, nine-year-old Charlotte asked if she could share her struggles with other kids who have a parent with a mental illness.
It was a milestone in a journey that began a decade before with her father’s recovery from near-death, institutionalization, and destitution followed by years of hard work by father and daughter to rebuild their relationship, damaged by the effects of Evan Kaplan’s bipolar disorder..

Inspired by his daughter’s request but unable to find any programs, Evan collaborated with Edie Mannion at the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania and with the City of Philadelphia to assemble a cross-functional, cross-organizational team of behavioral health experts, academics, researchers, and parents with “lived experience”.
They formed Child and Family Connections, Inc.
(CFC) to support families living with parental mental illnesses..

In late 2012, we incorporated as a 501c3, the first and only peer-run organization in the United States focused exclusively on helping families living with parental mental illness live healthy lives.
Our partners include the Temple University Collaborative, WHYY Television, Independence Blue Cross Foundation, Google, Inc., Resources for Human Development, The Patricia Kind Family Foundation, The Barra Foundation, filmmakers OC87 Recovery Diaries, and others.
We have strong roots in and a commitment to our communities.
We do not charge for our services, there is no cost to participate, and our programs are open to all families living with parental mental illnesses.
CFC is a lean, entrepreneurial, grant-funded organization and over 90% of our funding goes directly to programming.

As a peer-run organization, we share similar experiences with the people to whom we provide services.
We employ and train parents with “lived experience” to teach families real-world skills and strategies that promote individual and family resiliency.
Our Building Family Bonds Workshops utilize a proprietary curriculum, based on time-tested, first-hand experience, supported by the latest research from Harvard, UCLA, Dartmouth, and others.
We measure outcomes through data collection and focus groups, continually honing and and evolving the program.
Compassionate facilitators also draw upon their own recovery, sharing creative and effective strategies they’ve developed to successfully care for themselves and their families.
It’s difficult and emotional work for everyone involved so we create a safe and nonjudgmental environment.
Tears meet hugs as people overcome years of crippling shame, guilt, and stigma.
Cautious families usually arrive as strangers and leave as a community, armed with the knowledge, skills, and tools they’ve learned and practiced in class and at home..

In 2014, CFC added a second program.
Our weekly Peer Support Group for parents with mental illnesses is accessible by telephone or from the web.
It is also the first of its kind in the United States.
An experienced and caring parent who is also a behavioral professional, facilitates and guides the discussion in a healing and supportive direction with a people-first, recovery-centric approach.
Parents may join the call as frequently or infrequently as they’d like and may choose to remain anonymous or to introduce themselves to the group.
There is no registration or commitment required but for many, the Support Group becomes an important part of their support systems and a regular part of their lives.
Whether families join us for a workshop or parents call or login into the Peer Support Group, we are unified by our love for our families and a willingness to undertake the difficult work necessary that is part of the process.
