Der geographische Begriff Westasien steht für die Region des Vorderen Orients und umfasst die sprachlichen und kulturellen Räume des arabischen Ostens (Palästinensische Autonomiegebiete, Libanon, Jordanien, Syrien, Iraq, Arabische Halbinsel und Ägypten), sowie Israel, Iran und die Türkei.
Neben den arabischen Osten, Mashriq, tritt der arabische Westen, Maghrib (Algerien, Tunesien, Libyen, Marokko)..

Gemeinsam ist dem Großteil des Raumes ein osmanisches Erbe, das auch nach dem Untergang des Osmanischen Reiches am Ende des 1.
Weltkrieges noch zu spüren war.
Das Osmanische Reich, seit langer Zeit ein player auf dem politischen Parkett der europäischen Großmächte, war im 19.
