Detailed description is Located in the heart of Adelaide, Central Organic is the only store to visit for genuine Certified Organic Produce and Products.
Opening for the first time as a organic retailer in 1972 - Central Organic is the original and still the best! Central Organic is located at Stall 72 in the Adelaide Central Market.
The stall is widely believed to be the first organic retail operation in South Australia and one of the first in Australia.
Stall 72 began as an organic store in 1972 under the name “Frickers Food Conspiracy” and was owned and operated by Ally Fricker and John Healey.
The name according to Ally was “ a reflection of the ‘topsy-turvy’ political climate of the late 60’s and early 70’s and an expansion of [their]… hope that [they]… might play a small part in undermining the grip that the giant chemical companies have on the way our food is produced”..
.
Stephan and Maria Oulianoff were growing organic produce since 1965 and supplying Stall 72 since 1972 and at this time were still one of only a few commercial organic farmers in Australia.
It was not until 1982 that they decided to join the Adelaide Central Market tradition and operated Stall 72 under the new name of ‘Central Organic’ whilst at the same time running the farm..
.
Ally Fricker managed stall 72 from 1972-75 and formed the Organic Food Movement, which developed the first SA guidelines for organic produce..
.
The current owners of Central Organic Stephan and Maria Oulianoff had always been a part of the business before purchasing it in 1982.
Before purchasing Stall 72 Stephan and Maria Oulianoff were growers supplying organic; capsicums, egg fruit, zucchini, cucumbers, rockmelon and tomatoes fresh from their farm on Womma road in the states north.
Stall 72 at the time being the only place in Adelaide that you could purchase organic fruit and vegetables..
.
Stephan recently shared the story of why he decided to grow organic produce.
At first when growing fruit and vegetables the produce was not organic, but Stephan’s sister in 1965 became sick, it was worked out that the chemicals caused her sickness, so they stopped using them.
It was from 1965 that the farm became organic and the passion for organics began.
This was well before certification standards existed in Australia, with the early forms of the certifying bodies that exist in Australia today not coming to existence until the early 1970’s.
This also sparked their mission to inform more people of the benefits of eating organic food..
.
At first it was very controversial, many growers and retailers were upset, some even claiming that it couldn’t be done.
But Stephan and Maria hit the books mainly those that had been published in England.
.
.
Despite the non-believers Stephan and Maria had found success with them being able to produce excellent fruit and vegetables with out losing too much to insects, climate and with out the need for harsh artificial fertilizers such as super phosphate and other artificial fertilizers..
.
Later series of entomologist students from the universities came around to study their farm.
When Greg Baker (PIRSA entomologist) first saw the glasshouses he said it was different to other glasshouses because it was ‘alive’..
.
For a long time Stephan and Maria continued to grow produce for the stall but the work became too demanding so they decided to focus their attention on the retail side of the business.
Still to this date the commitment to organic fruit and vegetables is ever present with the stall itself being certified by the organic certification body NASAA..
.
Central Organic is currently the only Certified Organic Food Retailer in Adelaide.
This is something that Stephan feels strongly about; he states that it is his way of providing customers with the certainty that they deserve.
He feels that all retailers should become certified and remove all doubt from consumers as to the authenticity of the produce they sell.
It is this passion for organics that has led Stephan to only sell Certified Organic Produce in his stall.
This is another way that he hopes he can provide his customers with the assurance that what they are buying is truly organic..
.
Central Organic has over the years received many accolades but of particular significance for Stephan and his family was the stall being named the Small Business Champion for Fresh Food in both 2007 and 2008!.
.
Central Organic believes that community is an important part of what we do, and it is for this reason that Stephan regularly donates produce to local causes and also weekly donates all excess produce to the Moore Street Charity Kitchen – a relationship that has been forged over many years..
.
Stephan and his family invite all to come and visit the stall at the historic Adelaide Central Markets to share in this story and to experience Stephan’s passion for organics first hand.
