A Milli Takım'ın ve Göztepe'nin eski kalecisi Ali Artuner'in yeğenidir. 2004 yılında 16 yaşındayken profesyonel oldu. 27 Ekim 2004'te Bucaspor'u 3-0 yendikleri kupa maçında ilk kez forma giydi. Birkaç hafta sonra ise Bank Asya 1. Lig'de forma giymeye başladı. 22 Aralık 2004'te Beşiktaş ile oynanan Türkiye Kupası maçında dikkat çekti. 2005 yılında Denizlispor'a transfer oldu. Sezona ise takımın altyapısında başladı. 2004-05 sezonunda sadece Fenerbahçe'ye 3-0 yenildikleri Türkiye Kupası maçında oynadı. Sonraki sezon da takımın 3. kalecisi olarak bulundu ve hiçbir maça çıkmadı. 2007-08 sezonunun ikinci yarısı tecrübe kazanması için Altay'a kiralandı. Kira süresi bittikten sonra Denizlispor'a tekrar döndü ve 2 sezon takımın kalesini korudu. 2010-11 sezonu için Beşiktaş'a 1 milyon euro ve Emre Özkan karşılığında satılmıştır. Liseyi İzmir İnönü Lisesi'nde okuyup, Denizlispor Koleji'nde bitiren Gönen, Ege Üniversitesi Beden Eğitimi ve Spor Yüksekokulu'nu ve açık öğretimden de işletme bölümünü okumaktadır. Cenk Gönen 2015-2016 sezonu öncesinde Galatasaray'a transfer olmuştur.
