Detailed description is Cedron Farms Lodge is a fully restored, early pioneer limestone school house located in the Post Rock Country a/k/a Smoky Hills of north central Kansas.

Helpful Hints & A Little History.
2013-14 Hunting Seasons.
First and foremost, we would like to welcome you to Cedron Farms and thank you for choosing to stay at our farmstead.
This is our home when we are in Kansas and we want you to make it your home while you are in Kansas as well.
We would simply ask that you treat our personal belongings just as you would want guests to treat your personal belongings.
If you happened to use the last of a particular supply, please let us know so that we can re-stock before another guest arrives.
As you will probably notice when you drive in to the School House, the Pickett House offers a brief glimpse into just how long ago some enterprising settlors ventured west and decided that the fertile banks of Spillman Creek offered everything a young plains family could ever want or need.
Abundant trees for lumber, clean water free of salinity issues that are experienced further downstream, rich soil for farming and even richer native grasses to raise hoof stock to feed a growing family.
Little did they know at the time just how big a factor the native tablet limestone (a/k/a post rock) would become in their quest to tame the land and survive prairie wildfires.
Look around during your stay and you will see not only farmhouse after farmhouse that was built out of the hand cut native limestone, but fence row after fence row consisting of noting but limestone posts.
We have a fully restored example running in a north-south direction along the 80 acre line on the north side of Union Rd near the top of the hill.
While many barns and other out building were constructed of a single row of cut stones, the School House Lodge and many farmsteads are constructed with a the more common double row design that also helps create an air pocket to hold heat in in the winter and keep the heat at bay during the hotter months of the summer.

Your home away from home for the next few days, the School House, was originally built in the early 1900’s to replace an earlier school house that was damaged by fire.
The first school house on the property was constructed in the 1880’s entirely out of locally cut timber and it burned to the ground.
The replacement was constructed out of native limestone, but suffered a similar fate when flue tiles failed on the coal stove and the roof caught fire.
Today’s School House is the third attempt and it served the children of Cedron Township until WWII.
It has been restored in painstaking detail to replicate the exact external façade just as the children of the 1920’s and 1930’s would have viewed it on their way to and from school.
The structure was down to three and one-half walls, a few rafters, and a couple of window sashes when we began.
Pictures from area residents and the Lincoln County Historical Museum in Lincoln provided the details that we needed to get started.
The double entry door with transom is an exact reproduction of the original save and except our choice to use mahogany versus a local oak variety.
As the children entered the school house they would find a boy’s cloak room to one side and the girl’s cloak room on the other side of the small entry room.
A single window was placed in each cloak room to provide natural light for dressing and undressing on cold winter days.
The single school room was accessed through an interior door.
It had four windows across the back to provide as much natural light as possible for the students and a single window on the west wall directly across from the teacher’s desk so that she too had natural light from which to see her daily lessons and illuminate a chalkboard.
The harsh winter climate dictated that no windows or other openings of any type be placed along the north wall.
We designed the interior of the School House in such a manner as to insure that each bedroom had a window, the kitchen sink overlooked its customary window opening and the gathering/media area took in the bank of four windows that had previously been the sole source of light for the school children.
Today’s School House has two full baths, a complete kitchen, dining for six and a very comfortable gathering area with ample seating, a flat screen TV with a surround system and an array of trophy mounts taken by family and friends over the years.

A few helpful hints about the house; first of all, I have to apologize for the hardness of the local water.
Our water is supplied by the local water district from one of the area lakes and the mineral content is exceptionally high.
Unfortunately, this was not pointed out to us by the plumbing contractor at the outset of the project, and as such, we are limited in our ability to deal with it in a meaningful way without constructing another building to house a water softener.
The water will leave a mineral “film” on the dishes even though they have been run through a dishwashing cycle in the dishwasher.
We look at it as a small price to pay for the opportunity to enjoy all that nature has to offer in a pristine environment miles and miles from the light, noise and air pollution that comes with urban living in today’s world.
I hope that you will be blessed with the good fortune of having a clear sky at least one evening to take in the majesty of the stars.
To many, the Milky Way, is nothing more than a phrase or a picture in a textbook.
At Cedron Farms it comes to life every evening and is highlighted by constellations and planets for as far as the eye can see.
We have a small patio in the School House yard that is made of native stone fence posts and has a fire pit.
There are a number of chairs surrounding the pit, but you will find them lying on their side when you arrive.
We would ask that you please put them back on their side when you depart.
Kansas winds can be brutal, and they are especially tough on outdoor furniture.
If there is much of a wind, I would ask that you refrain from building a large fire, and if there is a significant wind, please do not risk starting a wildfire.
Firewood is available in the upper corner of the yard near the patio.
The entertainment system consists of a TV, DVD player, receiver/amp and a Wii system.
There are separate remotes for the TV and the DVD player.
The receiver is turned on and off manually by simply pressing the illuminated bar on the lower left hand side.
Once the TV is turned on, everything else is handled with the DVD remote.
We do not have live TV at the School House.
There is an extensive selection of DVD movies and the entertainment system is tied to the internet.
Pandora is pre-programed for music and Netflix is pre-programmed for watching additional movies and TV shows along with a Slingbox connection to TW’s Xfinity cable line-up.
There are multiple games for the Wii system if you are so inclined.
The School House has an open wireless internet network for your use.
You are more than welcome to use anything that you might find in the kitchen, i.e.
cookware, cooking ingredients, etc.
Placemats will be on the table when you arrive, but should you need more they are in the pie safe under the elk mount.
This is where you will find paper napkins and plates if you would prefer not to worry with doing dishes.
There is also a first aid kit in this cabinet.
There is coffee along with coffee filters in the cabinet above the coffee pot.
The cabinet under the coffee pot has a pullout trash receptacle and extra trash bags are under the sink.
Bath linens can be found in the cabinet over the toilet in the shared bath as well as soap, shampoo, and toilet paper.
Both showers have permanent dispensers for body wash and shampoo.
The green liquid is shampoo and the white is the body soap.
Extra bed linens can be found in the pullout storage drawers under the larger set of bunk beds..
Now that you know a little bit about the lodging, let’s get on to the important stuff.
First of all, as this is a hunting operation, every guest is responsible for completing a Hunter Indemnity form prior to engaging in any use of firearms on our property.
Secondly, Cedron Farms is operated under a Controlled Shooting Area permit issued by Kansas Wildlife and Parks.
The permit for ranch headquarters is number 575.
You may visit the www.kpwd.state.ks.us website to learn more about CSA’s, but a quick overview is simply that as the landowner, I am obligated to release at least as many birds each year as those that are harvested on the same piece of property.
To meet our obligations with the State of Kansas, we have a system in place wherein birds are released throughout the year.
We find that this approach offers the greatest chance of survival for those birds that are being integrated into their native habitat.
It also allows you, our guest, to purchase an annual CSA license for the princely sum of $18, regardless of your state of residence, as well as hunting without the confines of daily bird limits.
With this shoot and release policy comes the right to harvest roosters and hens, so please do not call the Game Warden to turn yourself in if you happen to down a hen.
We must maintain a copy of your license for our files and annual reporting purposes.
As such, please scan and email a copy of your license (CSA, or otherwise) to us at [email protected] prior to your arrival.

Thirdly, we would ask that you respect our wishes and use nothing larger than #6 shot in your shotguns.
It only makes sense that smaller bb’s will do less harm should there be an errant shot, an unseen dog, etc.
Also, we all know that there is not much left for the dog to retrieve when that pheasant flies right up in front of you and you take it out with 3’s, 4’s, or 5’s! If you happened to run low on shells, we may be able to supply your needs, or you can find extra shells at the hardware store on Main St.
in Lincoln.
Cedron Farms has an abundance of deer and four legged animals.
It is a rare day when one of our hunters does not spook a resting deer, so be on the lookout.
You are welcome to try your hand at calling coyotes while you are staying at the School House as well as searching for raccoons, bobcats, etc.
Please note that some varmints require a separate license while others have an open season.
Copies of maps that clearly identify our property and the location of the gates to access the property will be available at the School House.
For a variety of reasons, virtually all of our hunting ground located off of K-181 and Union Road is behind fence and locked gates.
Our local representative will unlock all of the gates for your arrival.
Please leave them unlocked so that you will have easy access during your stay at the School House.
We would ask that you close the gates facing Union Road each evening when you retire for the night.
The driveway from Union Rd heading south to the north side of the School House is improved in that it has been built up by a maintainer and has culverts for drainage.
It is not, however, an all-weather surface.
In the event of rain or melting snow, it is a much safer bet to use the “overland route” as we call it and take the ranch road that goes up the hill to the right of the cattle guard and follow the tracks through the pasture to the west side of the School House.
By the time that winter has formally arrived in our part of the world, the driveway will freeze every evening.
If the daytime temperatures rise to or above freezing during the afternoon, the road will be quite slick during the early evening hours..
Local dining options include Kay’s Hunter Café that is open for breakfast and lunch M-Sat.
Kay has home-made pies available every day that she is open and it is wise to order your pie as soon as you sit down because when she runs out, there is no back-up plan.
Eleven miles south in Sylvan Grove is the Talk of the Town café that is open for breakfast and lunch Tues-Sun.
A new convenience store has opened next to the café and it operates daily from7am-10pm.
New businesses in rural America are a big gamble, so the convenience store may or may not still be around when you arrive in Kansas.
Another local eatery is located in Lucas which is 7 miles west of Sylvan Grove on K-18.
They are open for dinner as well as breakfast and lunch.
If you head west on Union Road to the intersection at 20th Rd, turn left on 20th and go south to Sage Rd., turn right going west again to the “y” and stay left to the blacktop that turns south, you will run into Lucas one mile west of the K-18 Diner.
It will save you 5-6 miles versus the highway route.
Lucas is also home to the Garden of Eden (easily found with a Google search).
They also have a theatre that shows new releases Thursday-Saturday and a butcher shop, Brant’s, that has been operating in the same location for nearly 100 years.
They are well known for their custom made bologna and jerky..
Cedron Farms does not have a set policy on bird harvesting rates, so please feel free to contact us and let us know your preferences and we will price your stay accordingly.
In addition to ringneck pheasant, we also have bob white quail, chukar, turkey, and the ever present white tail deer.
Hunting trips can be arranged for all of the above.
We offer self-catered arrangements for those guests that have their own dogs, and are happy to take care of their meal requirements.
We do ask that the dogs remain outside of the School House during your stay.
We also use the services of two outstanding local guides that maintain extensive kennels with expertly trained dogs for pheasant and quail, as well as providing guide services for spring turkey hunts, and the fall deer season.
Currently, out of state residents must enter a permit lottery during the summer prior to the fall white tail season to obtain a license.
If successful, Cedron Farms can offer you access to some of Kansas’ best deer hunting where 160-200 pt deer are an everyday occurrence.

We have spent the past ten years developing miles and miles of CRP quail buffers, native grass terrace strips, and filter strips along our creeks.
All told, we have nearly four hundred acres in these CRP programs alone along with hundreds and hundreds of acres of adjoining farm ground, native grasslands and creek bottoms.
The ranch headquarters offers more than four miles of creek frontage and our southern ranch located just east of Sylvan Grove has several more miles of prime hunting ground along its creeks and tributaries.
We rotate our farming activities so that during the hunting season we always have ground in recently planted wheat, recently harvested soybeans and either recently cut milo with stalks left to provide natural cover for our bird population, or milo that remains to be cut offering even more cover..
