Detailed description is Il castello di Bernalda sorge nell'omonima località, in provincia di Matera.StoriaIl castello si trova in una posizione dominante sulla valle del Basento orientato verso sud-ovest. Fu costruito nel 1470 ma recenti scoperte fanno risalire la presenza di una fortificazione già in epoca Normanna e la forma delle sue torri fa supporre che fosse addirittura di origine Angioina. Il castello attuale è quello fatto erigere da Bernardino de Bernaudo segretario di re Alfonso II di Napoli. Dal nome del feudatario prenderà il nome l'intera città. Nel 1735 vi dimorò Carlo III di Borbone, il quale volle visitare i territori del suo regno, appena acquisito, in seguito alla guerra di secessione polacca.ArchitetturaIl castello ha una forma quadrangolare ed ha tre torri angolari, questa tipologia architettonica è propria dei castelli costruiti alla fine del Quattrocento. Le torri hanno una forma cilindrica con la base più larga in confronto alla sommità. Originariamente la struttura era molto più grande e comprendeva altre torri. Ma con il tempo e con continui aggiustamenti il castello fu molto rimaneggiato nelle dimensioni. Le tre torri rimaste hanno delle fortificazioni rivolte sia all'esterno della struttura che all'interno del castello. Nella parte interna del castello vi sono diversi cunicoli, uno in particolare raggiungeva la Val Basento ed era una via di fuga in caso di assedio. A causa della paura di quest'eventualità De Bernaudo fece costruire più di dieci pozzi acquiferi per avere una riserva illimitata d'acqua.
