Child abuse and neglect is the leading reason children and families come to the attention of the child welfare system. In 2011, nearly 3,000 dependency petitions were filed in Jefferson County Family Court. Currently, we can only serve 10-20% of the dependency petitions on the docket in Family Court. Judges are eager to appoint CASA volunteers to their cases. CASA volunteers investigate the circumstances around a specific case and offer an additional layer of protection so abused and neglected children are not further victimized.
