Detailed description is Vote For Carolyn Gaiero, AuD for American Academy of Audiology Board of Directors Member at Large.I believe my experience at the Local, State and Federal level makes me the right choice..
.
Early in my career my Clinical Fellowship supervisor instilled in me the importance of serving as an advocate for the profession of audiology and for the patients we care for.
.
.
Here’s an overview of my experiences..
.
I am a founding member of the New Hampshire Academy of Audiology and have served as President and on the Executive Boards of both the New Hampshire Academy of Audiology and the Maine Academy of Audiology.
.
.
I have participated in task forces and work groups in New Hampshire and Maine.
In New Hampshire I contributed to the development and implementation of universal newborn hearing screening protocols and procedures.
In Maine I was a member of the work group providing insight and recommendations during licensure revision as part of a sunset review process.
.
.
At the state level I provided verbal and written testimony on a variety of proposed rule and statute revisions.
Topics include, but are not limited to, mandated insurance coverage for hearing aids, proposed licensure statute changes including the removal of dual licensure requirements for Audiologists to dispense hearing aids, and Medicaid reimbursement..
.
On the national level I visited legislative offices for my home district’s members of Congress in Washington, D.C., and have repeatedly written them urging support for funding of the Early Hearing Detection Act, NIH Funding, the Hearing Aid Tax Credit and Direct Access for Medicare beneficiaries to Audiological Services.
In 2005 I forwarded nearly 300 letters from Constituents to our leadership in Washington in support of Direct the Hearing Health Care Accessibility Act..
.
I have presented on topics related to Audiology licensure and the previously inconsistent definition of a “qualified Audiologist” by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services..
.
I have been fortunate to serve the American Academy of Audiology in a variety of roles.
Most recently I completed a three year term as Chair of the International Committee.
As Chair I had the privilege of being a member of a small group representing the American Academy of Audiology at a meeting with a delegation from China.
This meeting was held in San Diego during Audiology Now in 2010.
.
.
As Chair of the International Committee I was a member of the Global and Humanitarian Task Force and since stepping down as Chair, continue to be active on the International Committee’s sub-committee on partnerships and affiliations.
.
.
From 2002 to 2008 I acted as the Region 1 Captain for the State Network Committee representing New England and New Jersey.
The Region Captain acts as a liason between members at the State level and the American Academy of Audiology.
.
.
As a participant in the State Leaders Network, I have attended every State Leaders Luncheon and Workshop since its inception in 2000.
Additionally, I am currently a key contact for Maine for Legislative efforts.
.
.
I have been a member of AAA’s Government Relations Sub-Committee on State Affairs Chaired by Gail Whitelaw, Ph.D., and previously on the Governmental Relation Committee’s sub-committee on Audiology Licensure led by Barry Freeman Ph.D.
and later Pamela Ison, Au.D.
I worked as a PAC Ambassador for several years and am a member of the 312 Club.
.
.
I obtained Board Certification in Audiology from the American Board of Audiology in 2003 and have had several opportunities to serve as a Mentor to AuD students while attending Audiology Now..
.
In an effort to recruit students into the field of audiology, this past spring I attended the Maine Principal’s Association State Science Fair held in Bar Harbor at Jackson Laboratories.
After reviewing the projects and having a dialogue with the investigators, I selected and recognized two high school freshmen for their research projects.
These individual’s will have an opportunity to be matched with an Audiologist to mentor them in a new research project for submission in this year’s science fair on topics related to the scope of practice of audiology or related fields.
An invitation to present at Audiology Now 2012’s Research Poster Session in Boston was extended to both individuals.
Each received a Certificate of Recognition and $75 to either help fund their new research project or help defer costs associated with travel to Boston.
.
.
The American Academy of Audiology established Preferred Futures in 2010.
Consistent with those, my first priority is to ensure Audiologists are known as the preferred Healthcare provider for hearing and balance care.
.
.
Additionally, I would like to see autonomy achieved for Audiologists through advocacy.
Currently I believe Audiologists have an identity crisis.
Given the prevalence of hearing loss it is surprising how many individuals, policy makers and others, are unclear about who we are, what our scope of practice is, and what type of professional education and training we possess.
I believe Audiology professionals need to dedicate more time and energy to this effort..
.
Ultimately the power to make positive changes in our profession lies with each of us.
If elected, I promise to work tirelessly to promote Audiology.
I will use my voice to reflect the 11,000 plus that stand behind me..
.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
I would appreciate your vote..
