Here at the George Strayton Center on Main Street we enjoy a unique mix of consumers and employees; their sharing of interests with one another encourages the development of relationships as well as the opportunity to discover and explore. In fact, the genuine caring and respect between the consumers and staff is what makes our daily lives together a pleasure instead of work.. A walk through our building offers a glimpse of a program that has evolved based on the interests and preferences of many of our consumers. The largest room has been separated into three areas, each with its own function and personality. Tables are joined in the center for large group gatherings such as potting plants for the garden, bingo, table games, arts & crafts, and lunch, for those that prefer dining with a large group.. Another favored activity that takes place in this area is planning and making decorations for various celebrations and holidays, and our Main Street folks do love their celebrations! . We have decorated and made prizes for Valentine's Day and our consumers and staff "invented" the "Main Street Dating Game". . For our Super Bowl party we spend weeks painting football fields with each teams logo and we eat special Super Bowl party treats after a friendly touch football game between staff and consumers. . St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with an Irish Soda Bread bake off and a visit from a local musician who plays traditional Irish Music. You can just imagine the other celebrations!. Our Theater Arts team also utilizes this large center room for their piano, guitar, and dance performances, many of which include our consumers and staff performances.. Looking toward the back wall you will see an enclosed area with a wall mural reminiscent of a quaint town in Italy. This secluded area provides another dining area for those who prefer a more intimate space and also small group activities.. A cozy living room with comfortable chairs and a lake view (of a very convincing mural) provides a respite for clients prefer quiet activities, some for medical reasons, some for personal preference. Here quiet music as well as magazines are available. A walk down the hall leads to an exercise area where consumers and staff work out to reach their individual fitness levels. On occasion fans will gather in this room to watch a sporting event or special game on the big screen TV. . Our garden is another example of how the interests of a few consumers and staff have "blossomed" into a multitude of year round activities that appeal to so many of our consumers and staff. Our consumers have left their developmental disabilities at the gate as they become gardeners. We watch with pride as their struggles take a back seat to the competence they enjoy as active participants in our garden. We begin our planting season in the winter months, nurturing small seedlings and transferring them into our hoop house so that they may grow in a warm and sunny environment. The teamwork that goes into preparing the earth for spring planting nourishes relationships as we work together providing nutrients to the soil. Each spring we invite community members to attend our annual plant and yard sale with the consumers running the show. In fact, one member will set up his own table to sell hand-crafted jewelry and makes quite a tidy profit.. Previously, over the cold winter months we had collected sap form the local maple trees in the community and were happy to sell the final product referred to as "liquid gold". Camp Venture was the only distributor in all of Rockland County that was able to boast that our delicious syrup rivals any sold from Vermont! We have developed relationships with community members while selling our products at holiday fairs, local art stores and at Camp Venture's World Chocolate Expo.. Opportunities to interact within the community are limitless. We have improved and changed the consumer's identity from one who is helped to one who help others. Our proximity to the Hudson River provides a plethora of experiences and opportunities to help keep our beautiful banks clear of debris. Our numerous volunteer experiences have included preparing meals at soup kitchens, Office of the Aged, Red Cross and American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels and the Department of Social Services to name just a few.
