Detailed description is Die mittelalterliche Burg Nanstein bei Landstuhl in der Westpfalz (Rheinland-Pfalz) wurde um 1160 durch Kaiser Barbarossa erbaut. Ihre heutige Bekanntheit verdankt sie einem späteren Eigentümer, dem rebellischen Ritter Franz von Sickingen.Geographische LageDie Ruine der Höhenburg liegt auf einem hohen Vorberg am Anstieg zur südlich von Landstuhl beginnenden Hochfläche, die später den Namen Sickinger Höhe erhielt und heute als Nordteil der Südwestpfälzischen Hochfläche zugerechnet wird.Der Burgberg erhebt sich 80 m über die Stadt. Auf seiner Kuppe trägt er einen mächtigen roten Sandsteinfelsen von zusätzlich 15 m Höhe, der ebenfalls Nanstein heißt und in den Teile der Burg hineingebaut sind.GeschichteErrichtung als SicherungsburgDie erstmalige urkundliche Erwähnung der Burg, deren Name von dem genannten roten Felsblock hergeleitet wird, datiert aus dem Jahre 1189. Sie gehörte zum heute pfälzischen Teil des staufischen Befestigungssystems, das Kaiser Barbarossa ab etwa 1160 im alten südwestdeutschen Reichsland einrichten ließ. Er bestimmte die Burg nach dem Lehnsrecht zum Sitz für einen Reichsministerialen, also einen seiner Verwaltungsbeamten. Das Lehen fiel im Laufe der Zeit nicht mehr an den Lehnsherrn zurück, sondern wurde erblich. Weil bei späteren Erbgängen das Eigentum nach und nach in kleinere Einheiten aufgeteilt wurde, mussten sich schließlich mehrere Familien die Burg teilen. Der notwendige Wohnraum wurde durch unsystematischen Aus- und Anbau geschaffen. Dadurch litt die Wehrfähigkeit der Anlage.
