163 Browns Hill Rd

Stanly,

North-carolina,United-states - 28097

Detailed description is Church Our desire As we commemorate our ancestors and friends who were pioneers in establishing Brown Hill A.M.E.
Zion Church, we are thankful to God for solid spiritual foundation that they left for us to build upon.
Our ancestors extend as far back as the 1800’s and the early years of 1900.
Through old records and gathering old accounts from our senior members, we can estimate that there were approximately 21 members in the beginning of our church..
The Brown Hill A.M.E.
Zion Church was organized in 1870, where the records indicate that Henry and Sarah Love obtained a special parcel of land.
The parcel was mostly farmland, which was worked by surrounding farmers usually six days out of the week.
Apparently, the subject about a place to worship was mentioned on numerous occasions.
The founders probably chose this place to start gathering in 1870, which was the birth of Brown Hill..
According to Elsia Morgan Love, the first Brown Hill Church was constructed in 1874 when a group of African American Christians held a meeting and decided on a permanent place of worship.
Some of the church leaders were Wesley Morgan, Solomon Reid, Michael Barnhart, Adam Morgan, Henry Love, Ephraim Green and others who later served as trustees of the church.
On October 27, 1874, they purchased nine and one-fourth acres of land, and an old church building, which is believed to have been a Bush Arbor for $40.00.
The deed was registered August 18, 1877 and listed on page 459, in book #11, in the Register of Deeds at the Stanly County Courthouse in Albemarle, N.C.
The trustees officially named the church “Brown Hill”..
During 1877, a year after the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, African Americans members of the Love Grove Methodist Episcopal Church, Locust N.C.
(now the United Methodist Church) formed a separate congregation.
They affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and the Brown Hill Congregation began worshipping with them together under a tent..
According to history the congregation worshiped in their first crude church for a number of years.
Under the leadership of our first pastor, Reverend H.C.
Chambers, the members decided they needed a more accommodating structure.
In 1888, with God’s help the new church became a reality..
Brown Hill was originally connected with the Wadesboro Monroe District of the West Central North Carolina Conference.
During the Annual Conference of 1929, the Brown Hill/Ebenezer circuit was transferred to the Concord District of the West Central North Carolina Conference.
The Brown Hill Circuit was separated during the Annual Conference in 1990, as we became a station church..
A vast number of outstanding pastors have served our church while enhancing its growth spiritually and physically.
The Reverend J.F.
Douglas brought us through a period of remodeling when our church was about to be condemned, because building standards were changing.
This historical milestone transpired sometime between the years of 1936-1946.
Our present structure was erected under the leadership of Reverend Johnny Ray Scarboro whose tenure was from 1962-1969.
This building was dedicated in 1967.
The Reverend Nebraska V.
Jones, Douglas Maven and Robert Mackey guided our church during the construction of the Fellowship Building, which was completed in 1982 and dedicated July 24, 1983.
Down through the years, several local preachers have served Brown Hill faithfully.
Among those were Brother William Reid, Brother Edgar Hamilton, and Brother James Hamilton.
To God we give the glory for the wonderful work he has done and continues to do..
Accomplishments initiated during Rev.
Harold O.
Robinson’s term from September 1990 through August 17, 1993 are as follows: encouraged the Trustees to pour a walkway, improved the building by painting the interior of the church and the fellowship hall.
He had a cross mounted on the wall, placed new carpeting in the aisle and the pulpit area and replaced the Fellowship Hall’s roof.
He also placed importance on preservation of our church history and heritage..
Bishop Enoch Rochester of the Tenth Episcopal District assigned the Reverend Harold O.
Robinson to a very challenging appointment as the Resident Missionary Pastor/Presiding Elder in South Africa.
This was during the construction and furnishing of the Spottwood A.M.E.
Zion Church for our sisters and brothers in Seshego, South Africa..

The Reverend William S.A.
Starnes came to us as an interim minister to complete the unexpected vacancy of Rev, Robinson.
Rev.
Starnes received his certification of appointment to Brown Hill during the Annual Conference of 1994-1995.
Through the leadership of Rev.
Starnes we graveled part of the grounds and the driveway.
He assisted greatly with helping to liquidate the mortgage on our building project.
The sanctuary was covered with a new roof in 1998; new carpeting was placed in the sanctuary.
Additional hymnals were purchased along with new appliances for the Fellowship Hall.
He had approved the future plans for the expansion of the church, which consist of enlarging the Fellowship Hall, adding an additional bathroom, and pastor’s study..
The Reverend Johnny E.
Douglas was appointed in 1999 following the Rev.
William S.A.
Starnes five-year tenure.
Under the leadership of Rev.
Douglas the land was pushed off in an effort to start the remodeling of our Fellowship Hall.
He also approved the purchase of the new playground equipment..
Our current pastor, The Reverend John T.
Asbury received his appointment to serve Brown Hill A.M.E.
Zion Church during the Annual Conference of 2001-2002.
Prior to this appointment he served as our interim Pastor in 1962 after graduating from Clinton Jr.
College in Rock Hill, South Carolina and while attending Livingstone College in Salisbury.
His emphasis on the importance of attending Sunday School along with his teaching techniques and encouraging youth to develop leadership skills has enhanced our Church School in all areas.
We give God the praise for His many blessings.
Reverend Asbury is working diligently with the Trustee Board and members to improve areas needing attention on the exterior and interior of the sanctuary to enlarge the fellowship hall is not a reality yet.
However we know that God will continue to walk with us because through it all we’ve learned to trust in Jesus..
Through our existence we have been blessed to have forty-five pastors, however the improvements made by all are too numerous to mention.
We are small in number, but God’s amazing grace and efforts of our past, present and future generations our church will continue to survive.
The significant contributions of our forefathers along with their God fearing sprit is still with us.
Thank God for the active pioneer in all phases of our church history.
We salute and commemorate all those whose ideas, future vision and intellect recognized the need for constructing a landmark that we cherish with pride and deep appreciation..
.
“Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations.
Ask your father and he will show you and your elders and they will tell you.”.
