All the parts that make up a bridge are important. Just like all the parts that make you “you” are important.. • Support. • Span. • Foundation. The span of a bridge provides the functional purpose of the bridge and allows for forward movement. Without the necessary number of supports on the bridge, a point of weakness can be reached. The foundation lays the groundwork for the entire process. When we are not whole, we are not able to be our best selves.. Our Approach:. . •Clients are supported by a mental health professional and an equine specialist.. •Equine assisted work involves activities that take place solely on the ground and there is no riding or horsemanship involved. . •The process is solution-oriented, which is a process that elicits forward movement and allows the client to determine what solutions work best for him or her. We provide an environment which facilitates and encourages personal growth, self-discovery and problem-solving.. •We meet the client where they are in their process with the belief that this is their journey to travel.. •No previous horse experience is necessary.. . What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)?. . EAP is an experiential approach to psychotherapy that creates an opportunity to learn about yourself and others by participating in activities with horses. . EAP sessions traditionally take place in an outdoor pasture or a barn setting and are experiential in nature (please see attire guidelines under the forms and information tab). The experiential element of EAP allows clients to find their own solutions to problems, while learning more about yourself and others through experimentation with the horses while receiving real time feedback through those interactions. You will have the opportunity to find deeper meaning and understanding of your own behaviors, patterns, and beliefs by processing the outcome of the activity with the team of facilitators which consists of a mental health professional and an equine specialist. You will also have the unique opportunity to try out new behaviors and attitudes in a nonjudgmental environment. . . EAP addresses a variety of mental health and personal growth needs including:. depression, anxiety, substance abuse, bullying, relationship issues, assertiveness, self esteem, self awareness, social skills training, communication, boundaries, confidence, team work, perpective, decreased isolation, impulse control, identifying strengths, leadership, and much more!. . Why Horses?. . The horse/human relationship is a profound one. As intuitive beings, horses have the ability to sense and reflect our feelings and emotions, even when we are unaware of them in the moment. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) or Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an opportunity to partner with the treatment team and horses as a process toward change and emotional growth. Horses are prey animals by nature and have a highly attuned ability to sense and respond to emotion as a means for survival. Consequently, they become mirrors for us in the therapeutic process as they reflect our inner most feelings, whether we recognize them or not. This can be a powerful tool in getting to the foundation of emotional distress. . Working with horses creates a natural opportunity for people to learn about themselves and others by stepping out of your comfort zone and practicing skills in a safe environment. . Like humans, horses are social animals, with defined roles within their herds. They would rather be with their peers. They have distinct personalities, attitudes and moods; an approach that works with one horse won’t necessarily work with another, just like people. At times, they seem stubborn and defiant. They like to have fun. In other words, horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning. An example of a metaphor (a figure of speech) is “I have butterflies in my stomach.” . Horses require us to work, whether in caring for them or working with them. In an era when immediate gratification and the "easy way" are the norm, horses require people to be engaged in physical and mental work to be successful, a valuable lesson in all aspects of life. . Most importantly, horses mirror human body language. Many complain, "This horse is stubborn. That horse doesn't like me," etc. The lesson is that if they change themselves, the horses respond differently. Horses are honest, which makes them especially powerful messengers. Horses are also non-judgmental, which makes them great partners to practice our newly learned skills with before we transfer them back into our human environment.. . Fees for Service:. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Sessions:. •$100/60 minute session for individuals; $120/90 minute sessions. •$120/60 minute session couples or families; $140/90 minutes. •$80/60 minute group session per individual. •Program costs vary and may be open for discussion depending on the demands of the program. Grant writing assistance is available upon request.. ***Bridgewater Support Services does not accept insurance at this time.
