Bethel United Methodist Church was established about 1882 in a “brush arbor,” a temporary structure that was common in frontier areas of the United States.
This founding date makes Bethel one of the oldest churches in the Deville community, along with St.
John Catholic Church which was established only a few years earlier.

The first church building replaced the brush arbor about 1885 with logs cut at a saw mill on Flaggon Creek.
John Tarver, Ham Tarver, Stephen Lawrence, Dawson Corley, David O’Neal, Peter Sanson, Sr., and others constructed the building using the rough lumber and hand-rived cypress shingles for the roof.
The first building was about 16 feet wide and 18 or 20 feet long.
It had only a single wall, was unfinished on the inside, contained only one room, and was ventilated by two windows and a door with rough wooden benches for seating.

That denomination existed until the “uniting conference” held in Dallas, Texas in 1968 during which the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church of today..

The original building at Bethel served not only as a center of religious life on Sundays, but also was a one-room all-grade (1-7) public school until 1914 when the Bethel school was consolidated along with schools from Holloway and Hickory Grove into a new, larger school at Holloway.
In 1917, it was replaced by a new building containing a larger sanctuary, later enlarged by the addition of a wing containing four Sunday School rooms during the 1950s.
The congregation began planning for a new building in 1959, but construction did not begin until 1969.
The present building was completed in April 1970.
Bethel continues to be the only United Methodist church in Ward 11 of Raides Parish..
