What’s the difference between an In-Home Session and a Board & Train Program? The difference is Price as well as a Dog Owner’s willingness (or ability) to be the one that works consistently and daily with their dog(s) to create the results they want as is described to them and shown to them during their In-Home Session(s). . . Best Friends Canine Services’ In-Home Session consists of, first, a free ½ hour consult with and demonstration by Dog Behaviorist , Trainer & Canine Care Specialist, Melanie Blair. If the Client likes what is heard and seen, a one hour paid session typically follows at the rate of $120. If the session runs a little over an hour, that's ok, we won't charge extra for it. During the session the Client is comprehensively shown what to do. Methods, techniques and the psychology behind them are thoroughly explained in order to effectively correct behavior problems and gain respect and consistent obedience. At the session’s close, the Client is left with post-session guidelines including a list of “Do’s and Don’ts” and “Always and Nevers” to be consistently practiced and implemented. Also, at no additional charge, the Client can call, text or email Melanie for guidance as they intensely work with their dog for the recommended two weeks. If, at the end of the two weeks, there is anything the Client feels they would like additional help with, Melanie can return for another session.. . There are other trainers and behaviorists out there who are really good at what they do but there are also far too many who are not. Many household dog owners are drawn into repetitious, recurring in-home dog training sessions or group classes with less than effective results. Even after receiving fancy ‘certificates’ that state their dog passed with flying colors or their dog earned a ‘good citizen’ award, ‘top dog’ in obedience class, etc., these dog owners have typically received little improvement and an impressive certificate when they were after impressive improvement and keep the certificate! Unfortunately, there are several individuals and entities that are teaching dogs verbs and commands during classes and sessions but then the owners don’t get the same results consistently (or at all) at home. Moreover, many of these canine students with behavior issues continue to have them. Time after time, Melanie has been called by frustrated dog owners who have given their time and money to minimally effective in-home training sessions or group classes. They often report how excellent their dog did, how obedient, during classes or sessions but how unsatisfactory they did after the trainer left or when coming home from group class. Melanie often lightheartedly explains, “That’s because a straight A student can still be unruly at home or outside of class and even get in trouble with the law. Think of human children who behave one way with Mom, another way with Teacher and still another way with Grandma. But if Mom, Teacher and Grandma all get on the same page with the same rules, boundaries and limitations, what goes and what doesn’t go, what is rewarded and what is not, then the gig is up! All three eventually get the same behavior out of the child. The same goes with dogs. All too often masses of obedience classes and in-home training sessions offered to dog owners merely teach verbal commands and the actions they mean to dogs instead of also teaching 24-7 respect for their owner. This typically results in outstanding behavior and obedience during the session and then not so great behavior and obedience when the dog is one on one with his or her owner again. Dog behaviorists and trainers are only as good as they are able to achieve successful results with a dog and, just as importantly, as they are able to teach the dog’s owner(s) how to get the same respect and consistent, successful results.” That’s what Melanie does without $tringing dog owners along via multiple $ession after $ession after $ession after $ession, and that’s why she stands ready to allow potential Clients to first evaluate her methods and techniques during a free ½ hour consultation and demonstration. If you aren’t completely convinced she is the best fit for you and your dog, she leaves at the end of the ½ hour with no hard feelings and no charge. It’s that simple. . . The Board & Train Programs of Best Friends Canine Services are for Dog Owners who, due to personal preference or time constraints, prefer to send their dog to a Board & Train Program so they can simply be shown how to keep all the good behaviors, obedience, manners and more their dog learns in place. The Board & Train route consists of the free ½ hour consult and, if the Client likes what is heard and seen, their dog (or dogs if they have more than 1 household dog they wish to be trained) is scheduled for the program of their choice. During their stay, dogs learn to be consistently and reliably obedient, mindful, balanced, social, mannerly and respectful. They learn to use a treadmill so their owners can still see to their exercise during treacherous weather or when there’s not sufficient time to exercise them adequately. They are desensitized to the sounds of thunder, sirens, hurricane force winds, animal noises of all kinds, construction equipment, horns, gunfire, crowd noises, etc. They, if applicable, learn to overcome any mild to severe behavior problems and issues they may have. At the close of the Board & Train program, dogs are brought home with instructions for keeping all their new behaviors and manners intact. This is an extremely important part of the program, therefore, included in the price is a required 2-hour return home session where owners are shown everything their dog has learned and during which owners (and other members of their household or frequent guests) will be shown how to keep everything learned in place.. . Board & Train programs aren't anything new in the production of Police K9s, Military K9s, Family Protection Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Assistance Dogs, Specialized Work Dogs and Show Dogs but they are new at being the preferred choice of dog owners of household and family dogs of all sizes, shapes and breeds to learn basic obedience, manners and to overcome behavior issues. . . In today's world where the technology created to give us more free time for ourselves seems to only find us adding to our to-do lists it's easier and even more economical sometimes to have a professional behaviorist & trainer create the mannerly, obedient, non-threatening, non-destructive, non-annoying dog you want or to tame chronic behavior issues so that all you have to do is learn in a few hours upon your dogs return home how to keep what he or she learns in place. Hence, Board & Train programs for family and household dogs are becoming the choice more and more over group sessions and private lessons. . . Best Friend’s Canine Services offers 3 Board & Train Programs. One is for dogs without major behavior problems, one is for dogs with minor behavior problems or no behavior problems, and one for deprogramming Military, Police and Sentry K9's so they can be safely retired to residential homes. Board & Training programs are available on a limited basis. What are the limits? Only ONE Client’s Board & Train student (or students in the case of two dogs coming from the same household) is conditioned & trained at the private residence of Dog Behaviorist & Trainer Melanie Blair at a time, with her personal 'pack' of balanced dogs. She believes in committing 100% of her focus and time to a single Client’s dog (or dogs) during their board & train stay with her and her pack. The student stays at her private residence and not in a kennel or training facility. Why? Because Mel feels that household and family dogs should be conditioned and trained as they live, eat and sleep in a genuine residential environment. Canine students are conditioned and trained to be respectful, mannerly, obedient, calm, non-destructive pets that thrive in private homes and residential neighborhoods with their human owners and families. . . It should be noted that Melanie does not use yelling, violence or treat bribes to accomplish the successful results she achieves. Also, although she is able to train dogs for specialized tasks and work such as Search and Rescue and Protection/Apprehension she feels there are already enough excellent trainers out there doing that. She prefers to offer what she feels is a greater needed service; training dogs that were bought or rescued and brought home as household pets to be respectful, calm, balanced, unafraid, mannerly, non-destructive, non-threatening family members. . .
