Detailed description is Das Bergell ist das Tal der oberen Mera (im Bergeller Dialekt Maira) zwischen dem Malojapass und Chiavenna (333 m). Der obere und weitaus grösste Teil des Tals gehört zur Gemeinde Bregaglia in der Region Maloja des Schweizer Kantons Graubünden, der untere Teil zur italienischen Provinz Sondrio. Der Name Bergell leitet sich aus dem lateinischen Praegallia (Vorgallien) ab.GeographieTeilweise wird auch nur der schweizerische Teil des Tals als Bergell bezeichnet und der italienische Teil zum Val Chiavenna gezählt.Das Tal fällt in drei Stufen vom Malojapass ab: zunächst auf die Ebene von Casaccia, die gleichzeitig den Zugang zum Septimerpass vermittelt, dann in den Talgrund von Vicosoprano und Stampa. Unterhalb von Stampa befindet sich die burgbewehrte Talenge Porta, die das Tal in die beiden Abschnitte Sopraporta und Sottoporta trennt. Auf einer Terrasse rechts oberhalb des Sottoporta liegt das Dorf Soglio.Der obere Abschnitt, das Sopraporta, ist noch alpin geprägt mit Lärchen, die im Herbst in feurigen Farben leuchten. Das Sottoporta zählt bereits zur insubrischen Zone; hier findet man Kastanienwälder und später vereinzelte Palmen.
