Its mosaics elaborated the complex symbology of the Book of Revelation: the Heavenly Jerusalem, the Lamb on the throne in the midst of the angels, the seven candelabra are examples of this decorative scheme. With the translation of nearly 2300 bodies of Martyrs from the cemeteries outside of the city, the Pontiff wanted to initiate a precise project which was exemplified in the most appropriate form with the construction of this Basilica and with the realization of its series of mosaics, the contents of which are an expression of the so-called "Carolingian Renaissance".
