La basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio è un edificio religioso dell’Aquila, sito appena fuori la cinta muraria, sull’omonimo colle.Fondata nel 1288 per volere di Pietro da Morrone – qui incoronato papa con il nome di Celestino V il 29 agosto 1294 – è considerata la massima espressione dell'architettura abruzzese oltre che il simbolo della città ed è stata dichiarata monumento nazionale nel 1902. È sede di un giubileo annuale, il primo della storia, istituito con la Bolla del Perdono del 29 settembre 1294 e noto con il nome di Perdonanza Celestiniana; pertanto è caratterizzata dalla presenza, sulla facciata laterale, di una Porta Santa.A partire dal 1327, il corpo del pontefice è sepolto nella basilica; inizialmente in un sepolcro della cappella laterale mentre, dal 1517, la sua salma è collocata all'interno di un monumentale mausoleo realizzato ad opera di Girolamo da Vicenza, maestro di Andrea Palladio.
