Detailed description is Le barrage Grand Coulee est un barrage hydroélectrique de type poids sur la rivière Columbia, dans l'État de Washington, aux États-Unis destiné à produire de l'électricité et à permettre l'irrigation.
Construit entre 1933 et 1942, il ne possédait à l'origine que deux centrales électriques produisant.
En 1974, l'installation d'une troisième centrale porte la puissance à faisant de ce barrage le plus puissant des États-Unis et l'une des plus grandes structures en béton au monde.Le barrage fut le résultat d'un âpre débat qui eut lieu dans les années 1920 entre ceux qui voulaient irriguer la Grand Coulee avec un canal et ceux qui privilégiaient un barrage équipé d'un système de pompage.
Les partisans d'un barrage remportèrent la partie en 1933 mais pour des raisons fiscales, la conception initiale prévoyait un barrage qui ne permettait pas l'irrigation.
Le Bureau of Reclamation et un consortium de trois sociétés appelé MWAK commença la construction en 1933.
Après une visite du site en aout 1934, le président Franklin Delano Roosevelt fit évoluer les plans en vue de construire un « barrage haut » plus cher mais qui permettrait l'irrigation.
