This is an eight day 24hr/day complete read of the bards plays, poetry and songs. And it's FREE fot the community of La Crosse to participate in his language of life.. . Why? We begin "playing" Shakespeare even as we begin learning the language. By the time we enter middle school it's scheduled into our education curriculum and continues through university's highest studies. However, when is the last time you sat down alone just to read Hamlet? For most, never. Because it's difficult, boring, inaccessible, long and silent. Well, in the last 12 years I've sat down with a group of people 14 times at Bard-a-thon and read Hamlet, and all of Shakespeare's other works. Each read was a unique experience and a lot of fun. Unless you try it, you'll never know.. . Bard-a-thon may be as good as any edudation program for Shakespeare...ever. It's become apparent after 12 years in Fairbanks that this event belongs to the kids. I recall one young man blogging that, after he had spent the weekend drinking coffee and reading five strait plays, he believed himself to be addicted to Shakespeare. Moreover, the community of Fairbanks at large waits for it, laughs about it, participates in it, and would be disappointed without it.. . Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre and La Crosse have long shared a connection. 20 years ago Sean kelly, Julie Mack, Paul Heckman and Sarah Slayton ventured north to help begin FST. Bob Joyce directed two shows for us, and Richard Tinapp one. Kit Mayer has designed almost all of our sets. All told FST has enjoyed collaborating with over 30 guest artists from La Crosse, and another 15 from St. Mary's in Winona.
