La compañía de Ballets de San Juan fue fundada en 1954 por Ana García y Gilda Navarra como un vehículo para desarrollar bailarines, coreógrafos y maestros de baile puertorriqueños, además de desarrollar y aumentar el público de danza en Puerto Rico.
BSJ ha incorporado bailarines, compositores, diseñadores y artistas visuales en el desarrollo del campo del baile en la Isla..
BSJ realizó su primera presentación el 12 de noviembre de 1954 en el Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y ha estado activo desde entonces.
La Compañía de Ballets de San Juan surge como producto de la Escuela de Ballets de San Juan, fundada en 1951 por Ana García y Gilda Navarra.
