Detailed description is Der Bahnhof Dunedin (englisch Dunedin railway station) ist heute eines der bekanntesten Bauwerke auf der Südinsel Neuseelands und ein Juwel der Architektur des Landes.Bahnhöfe für DunedinBereits frühzeitig wurde Dunedin in der Entwicklung der Eisenbahn in Neuseeland über den Schienenstrang erschlossen. Am 1. Januar 1873 wurde die Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway als erste Strecke in der seit 1871 in Neuseeland verbindlichen Spurweite von 1.067 mm eröffnet. Am 7. September 1878 erfolgte die Eröffnung der insgesamt 367 Kilometer langen South Island Main Trunk Railway zwischen Christchurch und Dunedin. Weitere Erschließungen des Landes in Richtung Süden folgten wenig später. Durch seinen wichtigen Hafen für Einwanderer aus Europa, aber auch den Export von Gütern nach Australien und Europa entwickelte sich schnell ein Bedarf an entsprechenden Umschlagplätzen. Bereits im Jahr 1875 entstand in der Nähe der Queen Victoria Statue von Dunedin direkt neben dem ersten ein zweiter Bahnhof, schon fünf Jahre später bestand wieder Bedarf zur Erweiterung der Anlagen. Doch erst am 3. Juni 1904 erfolgte endlich die Grundsteinlegung für ein neues, großes und ausreichend dimensioniertes Bahnhofsareal durch den Minister of Railways, Joseph Ward.
