Detailed description is The mission of the Baldwin County, Alabama, Augustine Literacy Project ® is to improve the reading, writing, and spelling abilities of low-income children Who We Are: The Augustine Literacy Project & Wilson Reading System.
The Augustine Literacy Project® (ALP) was founded in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1994 by Linda McDonough with the support of the Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill.
ALP is a non-profit organization using an entirely secular curriculum.
The Project now includes 14 satellites (such as ours in Baldwin County, the first in AL) in North and South Carolina and Texas.
The summer training in 2016 included the 1000th volunteer tutor to be trained! .
The Augustine chapters currently have approximately 500 active trained tutors.
Their testing record speaks to the success of this program.
For example, 45% of students tutored improved by one grade level, AND 40% improved by two grade levels.
That’s a total of 95% measured improvement..
The Project’s Board of Advisors includes teachers and educational administrators, volunteer tutors, attorneys, social workers, professors and community leaders.
Most of the chapters involve a partnership between a non-profit organization such as a church or community group and a local school.
.
.
The Augustine program provides each tutor with extensive classroom and practicum training based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, emphasizing the importance of direct instruction, engaging all the senses in learning, and presenting information in a structured, sequential format while targeting the student’s individual needs.
Wilson Reading System® materials help guide the lesson planning process.
Augustine tutors find this system effective, not only with children who have language-related learning differences, but also with students who struggle to learn to read because of poverty (lack of exposure to print and rich vocabulary) or English Language Learning (ELL) issues.
.
Upon satisfactory completion of the ALP training, each tutor is paired with a low-income child and commits to work with him or her pro bono for a minimum number of sessions.
Tutors usually meet with their students at the child's school at least twice a week.
An Augustine lesson is 45 minutes long and includes the five essential components of research-based reading instruction: phonemic awareness; structured, systematic phonics; vocabulary; fluency and comprehension.
Pre- and post-testing in phonemic awareness, word attack, written spelling, sight word recognition, fluency and comprehension is administered to measure student progress..
.
The two eligibility requirements for receiving Augustine tutoring are: .
1. low income, qualifying for free or reduced price lunch.
2. below grade level performance in reading, writing or spelling..
Reading, writing and spelling difficulties can result in poor school performance, behavior problems and low self-esteem.
Families who are financially able often send their children to special schools or hire private tutors.
Private tutors charge $25-$75 an hour.
Augustine Literacy Project® is committed to providing caring, professionally-trained tutors for those whose families cannot afford to pay.
The combination of nurture and knowledge that an Augustine tutor offers can mean the difference between prison and productivity for an at-risk student..
