L’associazione di aiuto medico al Centro America AMCA fu creata nell’agosto 1985. Vi aderirono una trentina di medici, alcuni sindacati e varie associazioni terzomondiste. Inizialmente i progetti si limitarono al Nicaragua. Era il momento della massima offensiva dei Contras, finanziati e guidati dalla CIA. La politica interna svizzera guardava allora agli avvenimenti nicaraguensi nel quadro del bipolarismo internazionale e il nostro governo veniva sollecitato dall’ambasciata americana a Berna affinché sospendesse i suoi progetti di aiuto.. Se oggi il Centro America non è più oggetto di discussione politica e ideologica, in conseguenza della caduta del muro di Berlino, rimane comunque una delle regioni tra le più povere dell’America. Con l’aiuto di nazioni ricche e con mezzi di intervento appropriati si possono evitare le eidemie, ridurre la povertà, creare occasioni di lavoro, promuovere l’autonomia di ogni individuo. Per questo motivo AMCA sostiene sempre la collaborazione, nel senso solidale del termine; il nostro intento è quello di creare opportunità e spazi di azione per favorire uno sviluppo sociale armonico, solidale, equo, laddove vi sono, o vi sono stati, squilibri tali da creare situazioni di impoverimento e disuguaglianza.. Con i suoi progetti sanitari e sociali AMCA ha sempre voluto favorire interventi diretti al sostegno delle fasce più deboli della popolazione, le donne e i bambini, evidenziando come il libero accesso alla salute e all’educazione, oltre ad essere un diritto primario dell’infanzia e di tutti, segna anche il grado di sviluppo di un paese. Con il contributo di tutti, donatori, collaboratori, partner, volontari, durante questi anni crediamo di essere riusciti nel nostro intento. Ma sappiamo che molto ci resta da fare ed è per questo motivo che non ci stanchiamo di chiedere appoggio e contributi, per continuare ad essere accanto a loro, ai discendenti di una civiltà tra le più importanti della storia dell’uomo, che ha arricchito l’arte e la cultura e che noi ammiriamo nei nostri viaggi e nelle visite ai grandi musei.
