L’ANM è l’associazione unitaria cui aderisce circa il 90% dei 9.162 magistrati ordinari.
Suo scopo fondamentale è la tutela del prestigio e della credibilità della funzione giudiziaria e dell’autonomia e indipendenza della magistratura, secondo i principi della Costituzione italiana.
Partecipa, inoltre, al dibattito pubblico sulle iniziative necessarie ad assicurare ai cittadini un servizio giustizia migliore e, a tal fine, offre il proprio contributo tecnico nell’elaborazione delle riforme legislative..

Le delibere relative all’azione associativa sono affidate al Comitato direttivo centrale, composto da 36 membri, che viene eletto da tutti i soci ogni quattro anni e nomina al suo interno la Giunta esecutiva centrale.
Questa è formata da nove componenti, tra i quali presidente, vice presidente, segretario generale, vice segretario generale, direttore della rivista ‘La Magistratura’.

L’Associazione Nazionale Magistrati (ANM) fu fondata a Milano il 13 giugno 1909, con la denominazione di “Associazione Generale fra i Magistrati d'Italia”.
Il 21 dicembre 1925, per il rifiuto opposto dai suoi dirigenti di trasformare l’associazione in un sindacato fascista, l’assemblea generale ne deliberò lo scioglimento.
