Swades is the film that gave birth to Ashutosh Gowariker Productions, but few know that the idea of Swades was first born before Ashutosh Gowariker wrote and directed Lagaan.
However, he decided to realize it on film only after Lagaan and hence Lagaan became the maiden production of Aamir Khan Productions, produced by the star of the film itself, Aamir, who decided to float his own production house to do justice to Ashutosh’s vision of the film.

With Swades, Ashutosh decided to produce the film himself but realized that the responsibility of managing a production while assuming the dual role of direction at the same time was immense and would be possible only if his wife Sunita Gowariker agreed to execute the production at his side.
SUnita decided to take up the task and in December 2002, Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt.
Ltd.
(AGPPL) was born.

Post Swades, AGPPL was immersed in the extensive pre-production work for their next production, the sixteenth century epic romance, Jodhaa Akbar.
The film was a daunting project for AGPPL as it was shot over more than two hundred days across the rough, dry terrains of Rajasthan as well as on a massively recreated actual size set of Agra Fort.

AGPPL then made a conscious decision to minimize the time in between their releases as Jodhaa Akbar released in 2008, while Swades had released in 2004 resulting in a four year gap between the two.
Hence, in 2008 itself, post the release of Jodhaa Akbar, they began filming What’s Your Raashee?, the production house’s first contemporary romantic comedy based on the Gujarati novel “Kimball Ravenswood” by Madu Rye which released in September 2009..

Once the principal photography of What’s Your Raashee? was wrapped, AGPPL began the pre-production of their next film, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, in parallel to the post production work of What’s Your Raashee?.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, a period thriller set in the 1930’s about the Chittagong Uprising, based on Manini Chatterjee’s book, “Do and Die”, released in December, 2010.
