Detailed description is Retirement home refuge/perm care of displaced/abandoned/abused exotic bird;education/info/support/counseling unique to those that work w/own exotic birds. Anza Avian Refuge & Rehabilitation Center is a 501©3 non-profit organization run by volunteers and supported by friends and community. All of the birds that are brought to our facility undergo a complete initial health exam by qualified veterinarians upon arrival. Once their needs have been assessed, we provide appropriate nutrition, environmental enrichment and housing based on the specific needs of each individual type of exotic bird. Even before the rehabilitation process can begin the cost involved to provide medical care, proper nutrition, heating/cooling, enrichment programs and other basic needs is staggering….and we need help. Monies donated will go for building enclosures large enough for residents to live in long term when necessary, veterinary/medical supply costs, nutrition & supplements, environmental enrichment programs to keep avian residents active and free from boredom or stress, and to pay our bills.. . BACKGROUND. . California Parrot Rescue dba Anza Avian Refuge & Rehabilitation Center is a 501(c)(3) created in 2009. The goal at that time was to “help out” pet owners by taking in displaced or abandoned exotic birds and finding adoptive homes for them. We were quickly over-run by the volume of exotic birds in need, amazed at the poor condition most of the birds came to us in and overwhelmed with need for space for habitat & enrichment, vet bills, and meeting nutritional needs - all necessary to attempt to positively modify an at-risk bird’s behavior so that it may be adoptable and enjoy a new “forever home”.. . In 2010 we setup a home based facility which we quickly outgrew. In 2012 we leased space in town to house our rescue program and opened a small retail bird store catering to small pet bird owners - selling seed, cages, toys, etc. to help offset costs of Refuge Residents. Volume very quickly exceeded space once again. In 2013 we acquired and developed a 3 acre piece of commercial property in Anza. Resident birds that are able can spend their days outside in individual private heated 10’ diameter Pagoda style huts and other large ironwork cages for smaller occupants.. . Anza Avian Refuge & Rehabilitation Center has evolved from a “rescue” effort to a “retirement home for exotic birds”. Our new 2.5 acre facility includes a 2000 square foot covered pond, a “menagerie” of exotic/domestic animals to view, planted garden, gravel paths with concrete ribbons, several raised vegetable gardens for in-house nutrition, a small Boutique, Custom Seed Bar - all set up to support our Exotic Bird Residents. Visitors stop in and for a small donation are welcome to walk the gardens, visit with the animals, or feed meal worms to the East African Crowned Cranes near the pond. Locals come to buy seed for their pet birds or just visit with our Ambassadors and other critters. . . OUR PROGRAMS. . ~ Ambassador Program. ~ AAR&RC Traveling Field Trip. ~ Continuing Education - Basic Parrot Class. ~ FEAR NO PARROT!!! . ~ Parrotdise Gardens Menagerie. . . Ambassador Program. . Included among our residents are a group of exotic birds that make up our Ambassador Program. These birds are extremely well socialized and participate one-on-one as therapy birds to individuals that have under gone medical procedures such as chemotherapy, dialysis, or just having a bad day. Often after a doctor’s appointment Bird-loving people stop in at our facility, choose their favorite little companion bird, walk around the gardens or sit in the sun next to the pond with their little friend. The results are amazing - for both humans and exotic birds.. . Traveling Field Trip. . Anza Avian Refuge & Rehabilitation Center’s Traveling Field Trip is an educational experience we offer local schools in our area. Our goal is to instill passion and the love of nature by exposing kids of all ages to the beauty and uniqueness of exotic birds (and other exotics) and to create an understanding of what we all can do to make sure that they will be around for everyone to know and enjoy in the future. We bring handleable tame companion birds, samples of nutrition, eggs, feather-types and other interactive exhibitions. We attempt to incorporate some of the student’s curriculum to offer a custom “hands-on” experience that is relevant to the children.. . FEAR NO PARROT!!!. . Fear No Parrot!!! is an off sight facility that breeds small birds for the pet industry. Sales of these birds help to support the Refuge. Also offered are hand fed tame companion birds - mostly smaller varieties.. . Continuing Education - Basic Parrot Class . . Basic Exotic Bird pet owner’s courses are offered at the Refuge. Material covered includes but is not limited to, nutrition, enrichment, environment, health, hygiene, husbandry and behavior. Hands on classes for nail trimming, wing trimming, basic anatomy, etc.. . Anza Avian Refuge & Rehabilitation Center provides comfort and support not only to exotic birds in need and the people that own them but also to members of the community undergoing medical procedures such as chemotherapy or dialysis. Our Avian Ambassador Program provides animal loving individuals enduring these sorts of uncomfortable treatments a place where they are welcome to come, (Fear No Parrot/Parrotdise Gardens Menagerie location), choose their favorite exotic bird, select a couch or chair and simply spend time trading positive energy with these friendly, loving avian ambassadors. The results are phenomenal!!! As we watch the calm, friendly interactions between bird lovers and ambassador birds the healing affect becomes evident before our very eyes. Smiles begin to appear on the faces that earlier reflected only discomfort and pain. Animals, (birds too), at times, seem to sense and respond to emotional needs of the people that love them. This program has proven to be mutually beneficial to both our exotic birds and the special individuals that seek comfort in the presence of these beautiful animals. Meaningful bonding & socialization of our rescued exotic bird with the special individuals who seek their company results in comfort, connection & the expression unconditional love for all involved. . . Anza Avian Ambassador Program plays a very important part in the rehabilitation process of our avian residents. Positive interaction with humans creates trust and security in the lives of these birds which in turn promotes their chances of successfully finding "forever" homes when they become available. Intense one-on-one exposure to people allows our avian ambassadors and our other avian residents the opportunity to bond and create relationships that can last a lifetime. The Program offers a positive way to create vacancies in our facility by encouraging successful rehabilitation of at-risk exotic birds resulting in appropriate re-homing. . .
