Originally known as Friends of the Animal Shelter, it was an all Volunteer, Non-Profit Organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals in the Decatur Animal Shelter by providing supplies, Veterinary care and equipment for the Shelter..

From 2004 through 2006, Animal Friends focused on sheltering, adopting, and fostering homeless animals in the community..

Since 2007, Animal Friends has made a concerted effort to maximize every dollar received by concentrating its efforts on a Spay/Neuter Financial Assistance program for Morgan County, Alabama residents and plans to initiate and maintain Humane Education for all 3rd Grade Students in Morgan County by promoting Sponsorships of “In Kind News” for each classroom.
Our Animeals Program began in 2006 providing Meals On Wheels clients with their pet food and kitty litter each month delivered by volunteers.

AFHS is a community partner with the Decatur Animal Services by administering the Special Medical Needs Fund for shelter dogs called the Dawson fund after the first dog saved.
